Hydrologist / Water Management Specialist

People Project Co Limited is recruiting on behalf of a growing mining company in Tanzania for an experienced Hydrologist / Water Management Specialist to lead water-resource assessment, development, monitoring, and management across mining, mineral processing, and site infrastructure operations. The position focuses on ensuring reliable water supply while managing groundwater, surface water, water quality, drainage, and environmental compliance.

The successful candidate will provide specialist technical advice on water management throughout mining operations. This includes conducting hydrological and hydrogeological investigations, developing site water balances, supervising borehole and groundwater activities, assessing flood risks, supporting water infrastructure projects, and ensuring that water-resource activities comply with Tanzanian legislation and environmental requirements.

Responsibilities

• Conduct hydrological and hydrogeological assessments for mining, mineral processing, and site infrastructure projects.

• Assess groundwater potential and identify suitable borehole locations and drilling depths.

  

• Develop and oversee groundwater development programmes.

• Assess surface-water catchments, seasonal flows, drainage systems, runoff characteristics, and flood risks.

  

• Develop and maintain comprehensive site water balances covering abstraction, storage, processing requirements, recycling, discharge, and water losses.

• Forecast current and future water demand for plant operations, mining activities, and accommodation facilities.

  

• Plan and supervise borehole drilling, aquifer testing, pump testing, groundwater monitoring, and water-quality sampling.

• Establish monitoring systems for groundwater, surface water, and water quality.

  

• Analyze hydrological and hydrogeological data to support operational and environmental planning.

• Interpret water-quality results and recommend corrective measures.

• Provide technical input into the design and review of boreholes, pumps, pipelines, storage tanks, drainage systems, culverts, water ponds, and other water infrastructure.

• Work with engineering teams to ensure reliable and efficient water systems.

• Provide specialist water-management advice for site expansion projects.

• Coordinate activities involving drilling contractors, laboratories, engineers, environmental consultants, surveyors, and government authorities.

• Prepare technical specifications, scopes of work, tender documents, contractor evaluations, and project budgets.

• Monitor contractors to ensure safety, quality, and technical compliance.

• Prepare hydrological studies, technical reports, monitoring summaries, risk assessments, and management recommendations.

• Present technical findings to management and project stakeholders.

• Train site personnel on water-monitoring procedures, responsible water use, and environmental practices.

• Promote sustainable water-management practices throughout mining operations.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Water Resources Engineering, Geology, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Minimum 5–8 years of experience in hydrology, hydrogeology, water-resource management, or mining water management.

• Experience in borehole siting and drilling supervision.

• Experience in aquifer testing and groundwater investigations.

• Experience with water-resource monitoring.

• Strong understanding of surface-water hydrology and drainage design.

• Knowledge of flood-risk assessment and catchment management.

• Experience preparing site water balances.

• Experience conducting groundwater assessments and surface-water studies.

• Ability to interpret groundwater and surface-water quality data.

• Knowledge of Tanzanian water-resource legislation, environmental regulations, and permitting requirements.

• Proficiency in GIS applications and hydrological modelling tools.

• Knowledge of groundwater analysis software and water-data management systems.

• Experience managing technical contractors and field investigations.

• Experience working on multidisciplinary projects.
