UG Shift Boss

Barrick Africa Middle East is seeking a qualified and experienced UG Shift Boss to join its underground mining team at North Mara Gold Mine in Tarime, Mara Region, Tanzania. This is a full-time opportunity for a mining professional with underground supervisory experience who can coordinate crews, maintain safe working practices, and support efficient production.

The role is particularly suited to candidates with experience in underground mining operations, strong safety awareness, supervisory capability, and the ability to coordinate people and equipment in a demanding mining environment. The successful candidate will contribute to Barrick’s commitment to Zero Harm, operational excellence, accountability, and sustainable mining.

Responsibilities

• Supervise underground mining crews and monitor their daily activities.

• Ensure compliance with the Mines Act and applicable mining requirements.

  

• Establish and maintain workplace safety and environmental standards.

• Communicate safety standards, procedures, and operational requirements to site personnel.

• Assist with determining personnel requirements for mining and other departments.

• Assist with sourcing and coordinating equipment requirements.

• Prioritize tasks and delegate workloads to underground mining crews.

• Monitor the progress and performance of assigned work.

• Provide leadership and encourage high levels of employee performance.

• Communicate routinely and effectively with the Mine Manager and other supervisory personnel.

• Ensure full compliance with the project Safety Management Plan.

• Assist with accident and incident investigations.

• Support the induction and training of new employees.

• Ensure employees reporting to the position attend required safety training courses.

• Encourage employees to participate in company safety initiatives.

• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.

Qualification Requirements

• At least 1 year of experience in one or more relevant mining operations.

• Good organizational and communication skills.

• Knowledge and understanding of reading technical drawings.

• Ability to follow engineering and operational specifications.

Experience and Competencies

• Previous supervisory experience in an underground mine.

• Knowledge of underground track mining methods.

• Strong ability to establish effective working relationships with employees and other stakeholders.

• Strong safety background and ability to promote a safe working environment.

• Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.

• Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, and Outlook.

• Knowledge of Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment.

• Ability to drive.

• Ability to work effectively in an underground mining environment and manage operational priorities.

About North Mara Gold Mine

North Mara Gold Mine is located in north-western Tanzania in Tarime District, Mara Region, approximately 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and about 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border. The mine commenced commercial production in 2002 and operates both underground and open-pit mining operations.

The mine consists of the Gokona underground deposit and the Nyabirama open-pit deposit, with the processing plant capable of handling approximately 8,000 tonnes of ore per day.
