Job Description

Barrick Africa Middle East is seeking an experienced L&D Superintendent – Operational Excellence Mining & Field Operations to join its team at North Mara Gold Mine in Tarime, Mara Region. The position focuses on building workforce capability, strengthening competency systems and ensuring mining personnel are adequately trained and prepared to perform safely and efficiently across underground and open-pit operations.

The role is particularly suited to an experienced mining, learning and development, training or workforce capability professional with strong knowledge of competency-based training, mining equipment and operational practices. The successful candidate will lead training strategies, operator development, competency assessments, simulator programs and workforce development initiatives while working closely with mining leadership and technical teams.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Workforce Capability Development

  • Develop and implement the annual Mining Training and Capability Development Strategy.

  • Align training initiatives with life-of-mine plans, operational objectives and workforce requirements.

  • Work with Mining Managers, Superintendents and Technical Services teams to identify current and future workforce capability needs.

  • Lead workforce planning initiatives supporting succession planning, talent development and operational readiness.

  • Develop sustainable learning pathways for mining personnel across underground and open-pit operations.

Underground Mining Training and Competency

Provide leadership and governance for competency development programs covering:

  • Underground production mining.

  • Jumbo operations.

  • Long-hole drilling.

  • Development mining.

  • Charge-up operations.

  • Underground load and haul.

  • Ground support activities.

  • Underground service crew functions.

  • Underground supervisory development.

Key activities include:

  • Establish competency standards and assessment requirements.

  • Monitor workforce capability and training compliance.

  • Support the implementation of new mining methods and technologies.

  • Coordinate technical training interventions designed to improve operational performance.

  • Ensure effective knowledge transfer across underground mining crews.

Open Pit Mining Training and Competency

Lead training and competency programs covering:

  • Excavator operations.

  • Haul truck operations.

  • Dozer operations.

  • Grader operations.

  • Drill operations.

  • Shovel operations.

  • Ancillary equipment.

  • Open-pit supervisory development.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and maintain operator and supervisor training pathways.

  • Drive equipment operator competency and performance.

  • Implement competency-based assessment programs.

  • Support operational excellence through targeted learning interventions.

  • Coordinate onboarding and progression programs for new operators.

Equipment Operator Development and Simulator Programs

  • Establish structured equipment operator development programs.

  • Manage simulator-based learning and competency development initiatives.

  • Develop progressive learning pathways from trainee to competent operator.

  • Coordinate refresher and advanced operator development programs.

  • Ensure operator competency standards are consistently maintained across mining fleets.

Competency Management and Operational Readiness

  • Maintain the integrity of mining competency systems across underground and open-pit operations.

  • Develop competency matrices and learning pathways.

  • Maintain training needs analysis.

  • Ensure competency assessments are completed and properly recorded.

  • Manage verification of competency processes.

  • Support workforce readiness for new projects, fleet introductions and operational changes.

Safety Leadership and Risk Management

  • Ensure mining training programs support critical risk controls and operational safety requirements.

  • Promote safe work practices and a culture of continuous learning.

  • Support site fatal-risk management initiatives.

  • Ensure employees are competent in emergency-response procedures and critical controls.

  • Monitor and address operational risks associated with workforce competency gaps.

Contractor and Workforce Development

  • Oversee contractor training and competency-assurance requirements.

  • Ensure contractor personnel meet site training and competency standards.

  • Support contractor onboarding and mobilization processes.

  • Develop internal talent pipelines for critical mining positions.

  • Support career progression and leadership-development initiatives across mining operations.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma in Mining Engineering, Mineral Resource Management, Engineering and Training, or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Mining, Business Administration, Learning and Development, or Leadership.

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122) or equivalent.

  • Assessor and Verifier qualification.

Experience and Competencies

Candidates should have:

  • 8–10 years of experience within mining operations.

  • Experience working in underground and/or open-pit mining environments.

  • At least 5 years of experience in a leadership or supervisory capacity.

  • Experience with competency-based training systems.

  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles.

  • Knowledge of mining equipment and operating practices.

  • Experience using Learning Management Systems.

  • Experience managing competency, training and workforce-development programs.

  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and engaging operational stakeholders.
