Job Description

Barrick Africa Middle East is seeking an experienced Mechanical Fitter – CAT Maintenance professional to join its team at North Mara Gold Mine in Tarime, Mara Region. The position focuses on maintaining heavy mobile mining equipment, coordinating mechanical maintenance activities, improving equipment reliability and supporting safe and efficient open-pit mining operations.

The role is suitable for an experienced mechanical fitter or maintenance trainer with strong exposure to heavy mobile equipment, open-cast mining operations, maintenance planning and scheduling. The successful candidate will also be expected to supervise maintenance teams, develop local employees through coaching and skills transfer, monitor maintenance performance and work closely with Engineering, Planning, Reliability, Operations and OEM teams.

Key Responsibilities

Safety and Compliance

  • Comply with Barrick’s health and safety policies, procedures, practices and applicable Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

  • Demonstrate visible safety leadership by setting a strong example for maintenance teams.

  • Promote a safe working environment through effective communication and due diligence.

  • Identify, report and correct unsafe acts and conditions.

  • Ensure employees understand fatal risks and maintain required critical controls.

  • Comply with company environmental and safety requirements.

Maintenance Planning and Execution

  • Perform equipment inspections in accordance with mine standards and OEM specifications.

  • Assign and prioritize daily, weekly and major repair activities.

  • Ensure maintenance resources are efficiently allocated and work is completed on schedule.

  • Manage maintenance personnel during execution of the weekly work plan.

  • Develop and maintain daily, weekly and monthly maintenance plans.

  • Supervise maintenance activities to ensure safe execution, proper work preparation and quality outcomes.

  • Take appropriate measurements and conduct quality checks to minimize rework.

  • Work with Planning and Reliability teams to coordinate maintenance activities.

Equipment Reliability and Operational Excellence

  • Lead maintenance practices aimed at achieving operational excellence.

  • Improve equipment reliability and reduce repair and maintenance costs.

  • Monitor maintenance KPIs, including:

    • Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF)

    • Mean Time to Repair (MTTR)

    • Equipment availability

    • Maintenance backlog

  • Work with Engineering and OEM representatives to implement equipment modifications, upgrades and maintenance best practices.

  • Provide feedback to OEMs to support continuous improvement in equipment performance.

Team Leadership and Skills Development

  • Directly supervise maintenance personnel and monitor their performance.

  • Implement development programs for junior and senior local employees.

  • Provide hands-on training and coaching to transfer effective maintenance methods and work practices.

  • Support skills transfer and team development in a cross-cultural mining environment.

  • Participate in shift and toolbox meetings to maintain alignment with operational and workplace issues.

  • Promote accountability, teamwork and high maintenance standards.

Incident Investigation and Continuous Improvement

  • Lead or participate in incident investigations and Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) related to equipment failures or safety incidents.

  • Implement effective corrective and preventive actions.

  • Identify opportunities to improve maintenance processes and equipment performance.

  • Collaborate with Foremen, Planning and Reliability Superintendents and Operations to prioritize maintenance requirements.

Maintenance Records and Systems

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections and testing in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

  • Ensure maintenance information is captured accurately and available for planning and reliability analysis.

  • Work with ERP and maintenance-management systems to support effective maintenance execution.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other maintenance-related duties assigned by the supervisor.

  • Maintain a high standard of professionalism and performance in a demanding mining environment.

Qualification Requirements

  • Technical or vocational training, apprenticeship or equivalent on-the-job training.

  • Relevant qualifications may include:

    • FTC

    • VETA

    • IMTT Trade Test

    • Equivalent mechanical fitting qualification

  • Tertiary technical qualification is required.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings relating to open-cast mobile mining equipment.

  • Computer literacy is essential, including:

    • Microsoft Excel

    • Microsoft Word

    • Microsoft PowerPoint

    • Microsoft Outlook

    • ERP and MRPII systems such as SAP, Ellipse, Pronto or Oracle.

Experience and Competencies

Candidates should have:

  • 7–10 years of experience as a Mechanical Fitter or Trainer, with substantial experience working on heavy mobile equipment in mining or heavy industrial environments.

  • Strong experience with open-cast mobile mining equipment and operations.

  • At least three years of experience in mechanical fitting and mobile equipment maintenance.

  • Experience with Sandvik machinery.

  • Strong knowledge of maintenance management systems.

  • Good knowledge of mechanical fitting and mobile equipment maintenance planning and scheduling.

  • Experience selecting, maintaining and operating mechanical equipment.

  • Knowledge of auto-electrical maintenance planning and scheduling.

  • Good understanding of open-cast mining operations and maintenance activities.

  • Experience in skills transfer and team development.

  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural environment.

  • Ability to manage a diverse maintenance portfolio in a high-pressure environment.

  • Strong teamwork, communication and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong commitment to safety, equipment reliability and continuous improvement.

  • Open-cast mining experience is essential.
