Barrick Africa Middle East is seeking an experienced UG Electrical Superintendent to join its underground mining team at North Mara Gold Mine in Tarime, Mara Region. The role is responsible for leading underground electrical engineering and maintenance activities, ensuring the availability and reliability of critical infrastructure while maintaining strict safety, technical and operational standards.
The position is suited to a senior electrical engineering professional with extensive experience in mining, heavy industry or industrial operations. The successful candidate will bring strong expertise in MV/LV electrical systems, underground power distribution, electrical maintenance, instrumentation, automation, control systems and PLCs, together with proven leadership and troubleshooting capabilities.

The operation comprises both underground and open-pit mining, with Gokona being the underground deposit and Nyabirama the open-pit deposit.
Key Responsibilities
Safety and Compliance
-
Enforce compliance with electrical and mechanical safety standards, including IEC, IEEE and mine standards.

Ensure strict adherence to LOTOTO and LV/MV switching procedures.

Lead electrical and related incident investigations and implement corrective actions.

Promote and maintain a Zero Harm culture across underground operations.

Ensure effective hazard identification and risk assessment.
Asset Reliability and Performance
-
Ensure high availability of critical underground infrastructure, including:

Ventilation systems

Pumping systems
-
Compressed air systems
-
MV/LV electrical distribution systems

Monitor equipment performance and implement reliability improvement initiatives.

Lead root-cause analysis of equipment failures and recurring defects.

Reduce electrical and mechanical downtime across underground operations.
Maintenance Execution and Planning

Oversee planned and breakdown maintenance activities.

Ensure maintenance quality meets OEM standards.

Review and improve preventive maintenance strategies with Planning and Reliability teams.

Ensure critical spare parts and technical documentation are available.

Coordinate maintenance activities to minimize operational disruption.
Technical Governance

Ensure underground electrical systems comply with approved:

Single-line diagrams and general arrangement drawings

Protection settings and coordination studies

Engineering standards and specifications

Approve technical modifications within delegated authority.

Drive standardization across underground electrical assets.

Ensure technical documentation remains accurate and current.
Operational Coordination

Align engineering and maintenance activities with mining production requirements.

Coordinate shutdowns, changeovers and major engineering interventions.

Ensure underground operations are prepared for peak-load requirements and operational constraints.

Work closely with mining and engineering teams to maintain operational continuity.
Projects and Continuous Improvement

Lead underground electrical and mechanical projects.

Identify and implement efficiency and cost-saving opportunities.

Support capital projects and ensure successful integration of new systems and equipment into operations.

Promote continuous improvement across underground engineering activities.
Reporting and Performance Management

Establish and maintain structured engineering reports, including:

Daily operational reports

Weekly performance reviews

Monthly KPI reports

Monitor key performance indicators such as:

Equipment availability

MTBF and MTTR

Power-quality impacts on underground operations

Safety performance

Provide consolidated underground engineering performance reports to the Site Electrical Superintendent.
Team Leadership and Development

Lead, coach and develop underground engineering teams.

Ensure employees maintain competency in MV/HV operations and relevant mechanical systems.

Drive accountability and performance among foremen and supervisors.

Promote strong technical standards, teamwork and professional development.

Qualification Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is required.

Postgraduate qualification is an added advantage.

Professional certification in Engineering.

Professional certification or licensure in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
Experience and Competencies

More than 10 years of experience in electrical, instrumentation, automation, control systems and PLCs.

At least 8–10 years of electrical maintenance experience in mining, heavy industry or industrial operations.

Proven experience with MV and LV electrical systems.

Experience with underground electrical distribution systems and mining equipment.

Experience with high-voltage and low-voltage power distribution.

Ability to interpret complex electrical repair manuals, schematics and technical documentation.

Sound knowledge of pneumatic systems and equipment/instrument calibration.

Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles.

Strong knowledge of advanced instrumentation and control systems.

Experience applying project management principles.
