Long Hole Driller

Barrick Africa Middle East is seeking an experienced Long Hole Driller to join its underground mining team at North Mara Gold Mine in Tarime, Mara Region. The successful candidate will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating long-hole drilling equipment used in underground mine stoping while maintaining required production, accuracy, quality and safety standards.

This opportunity is particularly suitable for experienced underground hard-rock mining professionals with proven experience operating Sandvik long-hole production drills. Candidates should have strong safety awareness, the ability to work independently underground and experience working with drilling plans, ring patterns, ground conditions and digital drill-control systems.

North Mara Gold Mine is located in the Tarime District of Tanzania’s Mara Region, approximately 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border. The operation consists of both underground and open-pit mining, with Gokona being the underground deposit and Nyabirama the open-pit deposit.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate the long-hole drilling platform safely and efficiently for underground mine stoping.

• Perform solo drilling operations, including equipment setup, drilling, tramming, shutdown and end-of-shift reporting.

• Interpret drill designs, ring patterns and hole plans.

• Adjust drilling parameters according to ground conditions to achieve quality drilling results.

• Conduct pre-start inspections and routine equipment checks.

• Identify and report mechanical or equipment-performance issues.

• Achieve production targets while maintaining drilling accuracy and hole quality.

• Avoid over-drilling and under-drilling while following development and geotechnical plans.

• Follow geological, regulatory and surveying markings and specifications.

• Install mining services when required.

• Work closely with technical and supervisory teams to maintain required safety and operational standards.

• Complete and update end-of-shift reports accurately.

• Follow the Shift Boss’s instructions and daily allocation of duties.

Qualification Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.

• Drilling Machinery Competency Certification.

Experience and Competencies

• Proven experience operating Sandvik DL422i or similar long-hole production drilling equipment.

• Experience with Sandvik DL421 or DL431 drills is considered relevant.

• Minimum 5 years of underground hard-rock mining experience.

• Demonstrated experience in long-hole production drilling.

• Familiarity with i-Series drill-control systems, automation features and digital drill plans.

• Strong understanding of workplace safety, hazard identification and procedural compliance.

• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, surveyors and maintenance teams.

• Ability to work independently underground with minimal supervision.

• Resilience and flexibility when working under demanding operational conditions.

• Ability to manage multiple tasks and respond appropriately during emergency situations.

• Strong ability to maintain consistent performance in a high-pressure mining environment.
