Hydrogeological Technician at Barrick – North Mara Gold Mine
Barrick Africa Middle East is seeking a qualified and experienced Hydrogeological Technician to support groundwater management activities at North Mara Gold Mine in Tarime, Mara Region. The successful candidate will work across both underground and open-pit mining operations, supporting groundwater investigations, mine dewatering, water-risk management, monitoring and hydrogeological modelling.

North Mara Gold Mine is located in the Tarime District of Tanzania’s Mara Region, approximately 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and about 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border. The operation combines underground and open-pit mining, with the Gokona deposit operating underground and Nyabirama as an open-pit operation.
Key Responsibilities

Conduct groundwater investigations across underground and open-pit operations, including drilling supervision, aquifer testing and piezometer installation.

Develop and maintain hydrogeological models to support dewatering strategies, water-balance forecasting and risk assessments.

Monitor and interpret groundwater inflow trends, pore-pressure data and water-quality parameters.

Collaborate with geotechnical, mine planning and environmental teams to support integrated water management.

Advise on water-related hazards, including breakthrough risks, fill saturation and slope instability associated with groundwater.

Maintain and update the Groundwater Management Plan in accordance with site standards and regulatory requirements.

Prepare technical reports, dashboards and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

Support emergency response planning for water-related incidents.

Train and mentor junior staff in hydrogeological monitoring and data interpretation.

Liaise with consultants and regulatory bodies regarding groundwater compliance and permitting.

Promote Barrick’s safety standards and commitment to Zero Harm in all hydrogeological activities.
Qualification Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental Engineering or a related field.

Postgraduate specialization in groundwater modelling or mine-water management is an added advantage.

Strong understanding of groundwater management in mining environments.

Ability to work in both underground and open-pit mining conditions.

Valid driving licence.

Good communication skills.
Experience and Competencies

3–5 years of experience in mining hydrogeology, preferably involving both underground and open-pit operations.

Proficiency in groundwater modelling software such as MODFLOW or FEFLOW.

Strong data analysis capabilities.

Experience with hydrogeological instrumentation, including piezometers, vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs) and water-level loggers.

Strong understanding of mine dewatering systems and water-risk mitigation.

Ability to interpret groundwater and pore-pressure data to support operational decisions.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
