Rig Mechanic

Fema Mining and Drilling Limited is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Rig Mechanic to support its mining and drilling operations in Geita. The role is responsible for ensuring the optimal performance, safety, and reliability of drilling rigs and heavy mining equipment through effective maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in minimizing equipment downtime and ensuring continuous operational efficiency in demanding mining environments. This position requires strong technical expertise in mechanical systems, hydraulic systems, and heavy-duty mining machinery, along with the ability to work in remote and challenging field conditions.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on drilling rigs (surface and underground).
• Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems on drilling rigs and heavy equipment.
• Service, repair, and overhaul rig components including engines, transmissions, compressors, mud pumps, drawworks, and rotary tables.
• Conduct maintenance and repairs on heavy mining equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, dump trucks, graders, and support vehicles.
• Carry out regular inspections to detect faults and prevent equipment failure.
• Maintain accurate maintenance logs, job cards, and spare parts inventory records.
• Ensure all maintenance and repair work complies with safety standards, OEM guidelines, and company procedures.
• Collaborate with drilling operators and supervisors to reduce equipment downtime.
• Respond to breakdowns and emergency repairs, including after-hours shifts when required.
• Support equipment mobilization and demobilization activities at mining sites.
• Train and mentor junior mechanics and technicians when required.
• Ensure proper use of tools, diagnostic equipment, and maintenance systems.
• Adhere strictly to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) procedures including PPE and Lock-Out/Tag-Out systems.
• Perform other duties related to equipment maintenance as assigned.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience as a Rig Mechanic or Heavy Equipment Mechanic in the mining sector.
• Proven experience working with drilling rigs such as Atlas Copco, Sandvik, or Boart Longyear equipment.
• Strong knowledge of heavy machinery brands including Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, Hitachi, and Liebherr.
• Solid understanding of hydraulic systems, diesel engines, and compressed air systems.
• Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical and technical faults.
• Proficiency in reading technical manuals, schematics, and engineering drawings.
• Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
• Strong knowledge of mining safety procedures including PPE, LOTO, and permit-to-work systems.
• Good communication skills in English and/or Kiswahili.
• Ability to work independently in remote and harsh mining environments.
• Physically fit and capable of handling demanding fieldwork.
• Valid driving license required.
