Reports to: Chief Risk Officer – UBA Tanzania
UBA Tanzania is looking for a qualified Risk Officer to support the management and oversight of strategic, credit, operational, and market risks within the bank. The role involves monitoring financial performance, conducting risk assessments, ensuring regulatory compliance, performing stress testing, and managing risk reporting processes.
Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Risk
- Track and report financial performance against budgets and strategic initiatives.
- Develop and implement strategies to identify, assess, and manage strategic risks.
- Advise management on risk-related issues and their impact on business objectives.
- Monitor external trends and events that may affect organizational strategy.
- Ensure compliance with Tanzania Risk Management Guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct monthly and quarterly stress testing on market, liquidity, operational risk, and capital.
- Monitor, report, and escalate internal and regulatory breaches.
Credit Risk
- Support the development and implementation of credit risk policies and procedures.
- Conduct credit risk assessments for new and existing clients.
- Monitor credit exposures to ensure compliance with approved limits.
- Prepare reports on credit risk metrics and trends for senior management.
- Monitor and escalate internal and regulatory breaches related to credit risk.
Operational Risk
- Ensure timely closure and escalation of audit, internal control, and risk issues.
- Review and escalate Key Risk Indicators (KRIs).
- Monitor system mapping, interfaces, and transaction integrity across Treasury operations.
- Oversee product risk limits and ensure New Product Committee endorsement where required.
- Assess and report on risk appetite thresholds.
- Document and report operational risk incidents with root causes and preventive measures.
- Ensure compliance with operational risk regulations and industry best practices.
- Conduct regular operational and market risk assessments and recommend improvements.
Market Risk
- Ensure accurate daily capture of FX deals and implementation of FX processes.
- Review market risk, treasury, and ALCO policies for adequacy and compliance.
- Monitor treasury limits and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Monitor market trends, market risk positions, P&L, and limit breaches.
- Conduct market intelligence and statistical analysis for management decision-making.
- Measure and report liquidity performance indicators and conduct liquidity stress testing.
- Monitor assets and liabilities and associated risks.
- Manage Forex, money market, and fixed income risks.
- Maintain market risk documentation, limit records, and breach logs.
- Prepare daily, monthly, and quarterly market risk reports and ALCO reports.
Key Performance Indicators
- Regulatory compliance.
- Timely monthly and quarterly financial performance reports.
- Monthly and quarterly stress testing reports.
- Effective breach monitoring, reporting, and escalation.
- Compliance with credit risk policies and procedures.
- Accuracy of credit risk assessments and reporting.
- Monitoring of credit exposures within approved limits.
- Timely closure of audit and risk issues.
- Adequate review and escalation of KRIs.
- Compliance with operational risk regulations and best practices.
- Accuracy of FX deal capture and market risk reporting.
- Timely liquidity stress testing and reporting.
- Completeness and accuracy of market risk documentation.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Economics, Computer Science, or related discipline.
- Experience in operational risk management within the financial services industry.
- Knowledge of banking products and financial processes.
- Practical knowledge of financial systems, data analysis, and trend forecasting.
- Good understanding of treasury operations and related risk elements.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in a busy financial environment is an added advantage.
- ACI Dealing Certificate(s) will be an added advantage.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of financial accounting and corporate financial statement analysis.
- Good knowledge of Tanzania’s economy and banking market dynamics.
- Understanding of treasury products and related risks.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent writing and presentation skills.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong organizational and teamwork abilities.
- High attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
