Safety and Emergency Response Officer at Shanta Mining Company Limited

Shanta Mining Company Limited is inviting applications from qualified and experienced professionals for the position of Safety and Emergency Response Officer based in Songwe. This full-time role is responsible for promoting workplace safety, enforcing safety standards, and leading emergency response operations in surface and underground mining environments.

The successful candidate will play a vital role in protecting employees, visitors, and company assets by managing emergency preparedness, conducting safety training, investigating incidents, coordinating rescue operations, and ensuring compliance with mining safety regulations and company procedures.

Responsibilities

• Promote a strong safety culture through training, inspections, and enforcement of safety procedures and standards.

  

• Identify workplace hazards, conduct risk assessments, and ensure compliance with safe operating procedures.

• Ensure adherence to company policies and legal and regulatory safety requirements.

  

• Investigate accidents and near-misses to determine root causes.

• Implement corrective and preventive actions following incidents.

  

• Maintain accurate safety records, reports, and incident documentation.

• Develop, implement, and maintain emergency management plans and response procedures.

  

• Prepare and update emergency duty cards and response documentation.

• Ensure emergency equipment and response resources are maintained and ready for use.

• Lead evacuation drills, emergency exercises, and post-incident debriefs.

• Coordinate emergency response during incidents involving personnel or property.

• Ensure the safety of employees, visitors, and company assets during emergencies.

Qualifications Required

• Secondary Education (Form IV or Form VI).

• Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment.

• Certificate III in Mine Rescue.

• NOSCH 1 and NOSCH 2 certifications.

• Level 3 First Aid and CPR certification.

• Fire safety and other emergency response certifications.

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Safety and Emergency Response Officer in the mining industry or a related sector.

• Valid driving licence.

• Experience operating Light Vehicles, Fast Attack vehicles, and Fire Tenders.

• Strong knowledge of safety management systems, emergency response, risk assessment, and incident management.

• Excellent leadership, decision-making, and communication skills.

• Good written and spoken English and Swahili.

• Physically fit and able to respond rapidly during emergencies.

• Ability to work independently and perform manual tasks to a high standard.
