Job Description

Perseus Mining (Tanzania) Limited is seeking a Fixed Asset Accountant to support its Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. The role will be responsible for maintaining accurate records of the mine’s capital assets and ensuring that acquisitions, transfers, depreciation, disposals, impairments, and other fixed-asset transactions are properly accounted for.

The successful candidate will work across mining, processing, infrastructure, engineering, maintenance, supply chain, and support departments. The position is particularly suited to an accountant with experience in fixed assets and capital expenditure within a capital-intensive environment such as mining, oil and gas, construction, or manufacturing.

Fixed Asset Accounting and Reporting

  • Maintain the mine’s fixed asset register and ensure all assets are accurately recorded.

  • Record asset acquisitions, transfers, disposals, and retirements in accordance with company policies and IFRS.

  • Apply relevant accounting standards, including IAS 16, IAS 36, and IFRS 16.

  • Calculate and post monthly depreciation, amortisation, and impairment entries.

  • Reconcile the fixed asset register with the general ledger.

  • Investigate and resolve differences between the asset register and financial records.

  • Prepare fixed asset schedules and disclosures for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.

Capital Expenditure Management

  • Monitor capital projects from approval through completion.

  • Ensure appropriate project codes, budgets, and asset categories are established.

  • Review capital expenditure requests and proposals.

  • Determine whether expenditure should be classified as capital expenditure or operating expenditure.

  • Track work-in-progress balances.

  • Ensure assets are capitalised when they are ready for use.

  • Monitor project expenditure against approved budgets.

  • Identify and report cost overruns or irregularities to management.

  • Support financial evaluations and post-completion reviews of major capital projects.

Physical Asset Verification and Control

  • Coordinate and participate in periodic physical verification of fixed assets across the mine.

  • Verify assets located in the pit, processing plant, workshops, camps, infrastructure, and other operational areas.

  • Investigate differences between physical assets and the fixed asset register.

  • Recommend and process appropriate adjustments.

  • Implement asset tagging and location-coding systems.

  • Maintain asset custody records.

  • Support departments in strengthening asset ownership and accountability practices.

Compliance and Internal Controls

  • Ensure fixed asset accounting complies with IFRS and Tanzanian reporting requirements.

  • Apply internal accounting policies and procedures.

  • Assist in developing and updating fixed asset and capitalisation policies.

  • Maintain effective controls over:

    • Capital expenditure approvals

    • Asset recording

    • Asset disposals

    • Impairments

    • Write-offs

  • Support internal and external audits.

  • Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for auditors.

  • Respond to audit queries and assist with closing audit findings.

Life-of-Mine, Impairment and Componentisation

  • Work with engineering and maintenance teams to establish appropriate asset componentisation.

  • Maintain appropriate component records for major plant equipment and mobile mining fleets.

  • Review useful lives and residual values of assets.

  • Ensure depreciation methods reflect operational conditions and mine plans.

  • Support IAS 36 impairment assessments.

  • Participate in life-of-mine reviews.

  • Gather information relating to production plans, reserves, and asset utilisation for impairment assessments.

  • Assist with closure asset tracking and rehabilitation-related asset accounting where applicable.

Lease Accounting and Right-of-Use Assets

Where applicable, the Fixed Asset Accountant will:

  • Maintain records of lease contracts.

  • Assess leases under IFRS 16.

  • Record right-of-use assets and lease liabilities.

  • Calculate and record depreciation on right-of-use assets.

  • Record interest on lease liabilities.

  • Reconcile lease-related balances in the ERP and general ledger.

  • Monitor lease extensions, modifications, and terminations.

  • Process changes to lease arrangements appropriately.

Stakeholder Support

  • Work with supply chain, projects, engineering, maintenance, and operations teams to ensure capital costs are properly captured and classified.

  • Provide asset-related analysis to mine management.

  • Prepare reports such as asset-age profiles and asset-utilisation reports.

  • Support replacement planning and capital investment decisions.

  • Train non-finance employees on capitalisation requirements.

  • Educate staff on asset tagging and documentation procedures.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field.

  • Professional accounting qualification or progress towards CPA, ACCA, CIMA, or an equivalent qualification is preferred.

  • 3–5 years of accounting experience.

  • At least 2 years of experience focused on fixed assets or capital expenditure.

  • Experience in a capital-intensive industry.

  • Mining experience, particularly gold mining, is strongly preferred.

  • Experience in oil and gas, construction, manufacturing, or another heavy industry is also desirable.

  • Knowledge of IFRS, particularly:

    • IAS 16 – Property, Plant and Equipment

    • IAS 36 – Impairment of Assets

    • IAS 37 – Provisions, Contingent Liabilities and Contingent Assets

    • IFRS 16 – Leases

  • Familiarity with the Tanzanian tax and regulatory environment is an advantage.

  • Experience using ERP systems and fixed-asset modules such as SAP, Pronto, or Sage.

About Nyanzaga Gold Project

The Nyanzaga Gold Project is Perseus Mining’s first planned operation in Tanzania and is located in the Lake Victoria Goldfields. Perseus made its Final Investment Decision for the project in April 2025, with first gold production targeted for early 2027.

The project places significant emphasis on sustainability and local development through employment, skills development, infrastructure, and long-term social programmes. Once operational, Nyanzaga is expected to become an important contributor to Perseus Mining’s growth and a major gold project in East Africa.
