Environmental and Social Safeguards Intern

WWF Tanzania is inviting applications for the position of Environmental and Social Safeguards Intern based in Dar es Salaam. This 12-month internship offers an excellent opportunity for recent graduates and aspiring environmental professionals to gain practical experience in environmental and social safeguards while supporting conservation programmes across Tanzania's priority landscapes.

The successful candidate will support the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of WWF's Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework (ESSF). Working closely with the Environmental and Social Safeguards Advisor and project teams, the intern will contribute to stakeholder engagement, environmental risk management, safeguards compliance, and community-based conservation initiatives, with periodic travel to field locations.

Responsibilities

• Support awareness and implementation of WWF's Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework (ESSF) across projects and conservation landscapes.

• Assist in integrating environmental and social safeguards into project planning, implementation, and monitoring activities.

  

• Support environmental and social screening processes to identify potential risks and impacts.

• Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring mitigation and management measures.

• Support the documentation and review of safeguards tools and related records.

• Assist landscape teams in updating and implementing Stakeholder Engagement Plans (SEP).

• Support stakeholder consultations and community engagement activities.

• Assist in implementing and documenting Grievance Redress Mechanisms (GRM).

• Support the application of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) principles where applicable.

• Engage effectively with communities, including vulnerable and marginalized groups.

• Monitor the effectiveness of mitigation measures and support corrective actions where necessary.

• Maintain accurate environmental and social safeguards documentation.

• Contribute to safeguards training sessions, awareness campaigns, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

• Support data collection, management, analysis, and reporting activities.

• Perform any other duties assigned by the Environmental and Social Safeguards Advisor.

Qualifications Required

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Management, Environmental Sciences, Conservation, Natural Resources Management, Risk Management, or a related field.

• Exposure to environmental and social safeguards.

• Knowledge of Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA).

• Exposure to sustainable development principles.

• Experience or understanding of community engagement approaches.

• Knowledge of conservation or environmental management.

• Exposure to community-based conservation or natural resource management initiatives.

• Previous internship, volunteer, research, or field experience in a related area is an added advantage.

• Basic understanding of environmental and social safeguards principles.

• Knowledge of environmental risk assessment and mitigation approaches.

• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders and local communities.

• Knowledge of stakeholder engagement, grievance mechanisms, and FPIC principles.

• Experience using data collection tools such as KoboToolbox is an added advantage.

• Excellent written and spoken communication skills in both English and Kiswahili.

• Willingness and ability to travel frequently to rural and remote project locations.
