Job Description

Barrick is seeking an experienced and discovery-focused Exploration Project Lead to join its Tanzania Exploration Team. The successful candidate will lead exploration activities aimed at identifying and advancing high-quality gold and copper opportunities while contributing to the growth of Barrick’s exploration portfolio in Tanzania. This is a senior opportunity for an experienced geologist with strong technical, field and project leadership capabilities.

The Exploration Project Lead will oversee near-mine and regional exploration programs, from target generation and geological modelling through drilling and evaluation. The role also involves leading multidisciplinary teams, managing contractors and exploration budgets, maintaining high safety and technical standards, and supporting responsible engagement with communities and regulatory stakeholders.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Lead the planning and execution of near-mine and regional exploration programs in line with country strategy, approved budgets and business objectives.

  • Drive target generation, geological modelling, drilling and evaluation to advance discovery and resource-growth opportunities.

  • Establish clear decision points throughout exploration projects to support effective technical and business decisions.

  • Maintain high technical standards in geological interpretation, drill targeting, geological logging, sampling, QA/QC and exploration data management.

  • Lead and develop the site exploration team by establishing clear responsibilities, promoting collaboration and maintaining high technical performance.

  • Manage drilling contractors and consultants to ensure delivery against safety, productivity, quality, cost and contractual requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with Journey to Zero, the Global Drilling Standard, critical controls, environmental requirements and applicable regulatory and ISO standards.

  • Manage exploration project schedules, budgets, forecasts and operational risks.

  • Implement timely corrective actions where project performance deviates from approved plans.

  • Support stakeholder engagement, land access, compensation, permitting and licence compliance.

  • Help ensure responsible and uninterrupted exploration activities.

  • Prepare accurate and timely technical, operational, safety and financial reports.

  • Provide clear recommendations to the Country Exploration Manager and Africa & Middle East leadership.

  • Promote Barrick’s commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, community engagement and sustainable exploration practices.

Qualifications Required

Applicants should meet the following qualifications and experience requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology or Geoscience from a recognized institution.

  • An advanced degree such as an MSc or PhD will be an added advantage.

  • 10–15 years of progressive experience in mineral exploration.

  • Experience in orogenic gold systems, VMS and IRGD is preferred.

  • At least 3–5 years of experience in a senior technical or project leadership position.

  • Proven experience managing multidisciplinary exploration teams.

  • Demonstrated experience leading near-mine and regional exploration programs from target generation through drilling and evaluation.

  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety, community engagement and environmental responsibility.

  • Exposure to world-class exploration districts and Tier 1 ore bodies is advantageous.

  • A proven track record of discovery will be an added advantage.

  • Strong understanding of mineralisation models and geological processes.

  • Strong geological, geophysical and geochemical interpretation and integration skills.

  • Significant field-based exploration experience in Africa and/or the Middle East.

  • Strong leadership skills with a self-motivated and discovery-driven approach.

  • Ability to work effectively within high-performing, multidisciplinary teams.

  • Proficiency in GIS and 3D geological modelling software.

  • Experience with ArcGIS, Leapfrog Geo, Micromine or ioGAS will be an added advantage.

  • Ability to prepare concise technical and business-focused presentations and reports for a broad range of stakeholders.

  • Good communication and administration skills.
