Position: Obstetrician Gynaecologist

Location: Liwale, Lindi – Tanzania
Reports To: Project Medical Referent
Employment Type: Full Time

Main Purpose

To implement obstetric and gynaecological procedures and provide specialized care during pregnancy and childbirth in order to improve reproductive health and reduce maternal and neonatal risks, following MSF and Tanzanian medical protocols.

Key Responsibilities

General Duties

  • Provide prevention, diagnosis, and treatment related to gynaecology and obstetrics.
  • Ensure implementation of MSF clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Collect and analyze gynaecological data for improved clinical outcomes.
  • Supervise gynaecological staff recruitment, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of medical equipment and drug supplies.

Clinical and Quality Care Improvement

  • Provide specialist care for complicated pregnancies and deliveries.
  • Lead surgical obstetric care including emergency procedures.
  • Participate in 24/7 emergency obstetric on-call coverage.
  • Implement Ministry of Health and MSF labour management protocols.
  • Conduct C-section audits to review indications and outcomes.
  • Ensure proper surgical antibiotic use.
  • Lead maternal death reviews and near-miss audits.
  • Coordinate telemedicine referrals between hospitals and health facilities.

Team Capacity Building

  • Train and mentor medical officers, clinical officers, and midwives.
  • Conduct bedside teaching and clinical case discussions.
  • Provide training on emergency obstetric procedures such as:
    • Shoulder dystocia
    • Cord prolapse
    • Breech delivery
    • Vacuum-assisted delivery

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate maternity and surgical records.
  • Monitor key indicators including:
    • Maternal mortality ratio
    • C-section rate
    • Post-operative infection rate
  • Ensure proper documentation of surgical procedures.

Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s Degree in Gynecology from a recognized university.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years certified experience in Gynecology and Obstetrics.
  • Previous experience with MSF or NGOs in developing countries is an advantage.

Skills

  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel).
  • Strong clinical and leadership skills.

Languages

  • English and Swahili required.

Salary and Benefits

  • Basic Salary: TZS 4,250,000 per month
  • Seniority Increment: 2% after 12 months and an additional 2% annually thereafter.
  • Additional benefits explained during interview.
