Engineer 3 – UG Mine Planning at AngloGold Ashanti Tanzania

AngloGold Ashanti Tanzania is seeking an experienced Engineer 3 – UG Mine Planning to support the development and optimization of its underground gold mining operations in Geita. The role focuses on developing mine planning options, production schedules, forecasts, and budgets that support the successful delivery of underground mining targets while aligning with the company’s vision and values.

The successful candidate will contribute to short-term, medium-term, and long-term mine planning across day-to-week, 1–3 months, 4–18 months, and 18-month-to-life-of-mine planning horizons. The position also involves optimizing mining methods, designs, sequencing, infrastructure, equipment, costs, and operational performance to maximize the value of the underground orebody.

Responsibilities include:

• Contribute to Mine Planning systems that deliver underground mine schedules and maximize the value of the orebody.
• Deliver accurate physical schedules for the underground mine under the direction of the Planning Superintendent.
• Support the development of organizational capability within the Mine Technical Services Department.
• Undertake resource identification and evaluation to optimize development of the gold mine asset.
• Identify opportunities for significant improvements in mining productivity and cost performance.
• Authorize and oversee the creation of mine physical schedules prepared by the Planning Engineer II.
• Develop systems that support effective planning, efficient work practices, safe operations, and performance monitoring.
• Create standards, procedures, and guidelines for planning department activities and ensure they are properly document controlled.
• Support Operational Excellence initiatives and value creation within the Mine Scheduling Department.
• Maintain a safe work environment and comply with SHE&C plans, procedures, management systems, and processes.
• Develop constructive relationships with colleagues, business partners, and other stakeholders.
• Apply appropriate management and people practices within the Mine Technical UG Department.
• Report performance against plan and identify and rectify variances.
• Complete comprehensive handover packages for the Mine Planning team covering the Life of Mine Plan.
• Include strategic intent, mine design, infrastructure specifications, production schedules, financial models, risks, issues, and mitigation strategies in relevant handover documentation.
• Implement strategies that optimize delivery of mine schedules and maximize underground orebody value.
• Support the adoption of innovative equipment, technology, and work methods.
• Contribute to strategies that optimize the delivery of mine plans, designs, and work packages.
• Analyze mining methods, cutoff grades, designs, sequencing, infrastructure, and equipment requirements to determine the economics of mining and study areas.
• Evaluate mining and study options against strategic objectives and identify opportunities for further optimization or termination.
• Communicate potential threats to budget delivery, including grade, physical, and schedule variances.
• Develop plans to reduce the potential business impact of identified variances.
• Implement formal risk assessments for monthly schedules and quarterly forecasts.
• Consider safety in design when developing mine designs, development sequences, and underground infrastructure specifications.
• Participate actively in Operational Excellence initiatives and identify opportunities for value creation.
• Track progress against plans, schedules, and expected outcomes.
• Comply with standards, procedures, and guidelines applicable to Mine Scheduling activities.
• Identify development needs of direct reports and support their ability to manage business processes, workgroups, contractors, assets, and other resources.

Qualifications and requirements:

• Degree in Mining Engineering or a relevant discipline.
• Professional registration with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB).
• At least 7 years of operational experience in an underground mine.
• Experience with mine design and scheduling software, including Deswik, Studio UG, EPS, Ventsim, Vulcan, and Mine Stope Optimiser.
• Broad knowledge and experience in resource and reserve estimation.
• Experience in underground mine design and infrastructure specification.
• Strong knowledge of mine scheduling and equipment selection.
• Experience in cost estimation, planning, and budgeting.
• Knowledge of discounted cash flow analysis.
• Experience in contractor and consultant management.
• Sound understanding of mining value and risk drivers within a business unit.
• Good communication skills.
• Good report writing skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Ability to demonstrate behaviours consistent with AngloGold Ashanti values.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
