Assistant Accountant

Britam Insurance Tanzania is inviting applications from qualified accounting and finance professionals for the position of Assistant Accountant in Dar es Salaam. The successful candidate will support financial operations involving client and intermediary accounts, premium collections, reconciliations, credit control, and commission payments.

The role is particularly suitable for candidates with 2 to 3 years of relevant accounting or credit control experience and an understanding of insurance operations. The successful candidate will work closely with brokers, agents, clients, underwriters, sales teams, and claims departments to ensure accurate and timely financial processing.

About the Role

The Assistant Accountant will report to the Management Accountant and play an important role in maintaining accurate customer and intermediary accounts. The position requires close monitoring of premium payments, daily receipts, account reconciliations, and outstanding receivables.

The role also requires strict adherence to the “cash before cover” policy, timely verification of premium payments before claims processing, and effective resolution of financial queries from brokers, agents, and direct clients.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Monitoring customer accounts on a daily basis.

  

• Enforcing the “cash before cover” policy.

• Allocating daily receipts to the appropriate customer accounts.

  

• Working with underwriters to identify and allocate unallocated funds.

• Conducting monthly reconciliations with brokers and agents.

  

• Preparing and sending monthly account statements by the 10th of each month.

• Processing commission payments within the first week of every month.

• Verifying premium payments within 24 hours before claims are processed.

• Helping prevent delays or unauthorised claims payments.

• Responding promptly to queries from direct clients and agencies.

• Supporting credit control and accounts receivable strategies across branches and regional operations.

• Providing account information to Sales, Underwriting, and Claims departments.

• Monitoring departmental performance against established scorecards.

• Tracking debtor targets and supporting efforts to improve receivables management.

• Maintaining accurate financial records and account information.

• Supporting effective financial controls within the insurance business.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants should have:

• A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.

• 2 to 3 years of experience in a similar accounting or credit control role.

• Understanding of insurance regulatory frameworks, including TIRA guidelines.

• Understanding of insurance products and their financial dynamics.

• Good account reconciliation and financial control skills.

• Ability to work accurately with customer and intermediary account information.

• Good communication and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to work effectively with brokers, agents, clients, underwriters, sales teams, and claims teams.
