Job Description

Hannah Bennie School (HBS) was established to provide children in Kigamboni with access to high-quality English-medium education close to home. Alongside its academic mission, the school is committed to ensuring that students and staff receive safe, nutritious, and well-prepared meals that support health, concentration, and overall wellbeing.

To strengthen its catering services, HBS is seeking a skilled and experienced Head Chef to lead the school kitchen operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for menu planning, food production, kitchen supervision, and ensuring full compliance with food safety and hygiene standards while maintaining efficiency and cost control.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and prepare balanced, nutritious menus for students and staff in line with dietary guidelines
  • Lead, supervise, and train kitchen staff to ensure efficient daily food production
  • Manage food costs, portion control, and kitchen inventory to reduce waste and optimize resources
  • Ensure strict compliance with food safety standards, hygiene protocols (HACCP), and TFDA regulations
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and proper functioning of kitchen equipment and storage areas
  • Coordinate with procurement teams on sourcing fresh produce, dry goods, and supplier quality assurance
  • Cater for special dietary requirements, food allergies, and school events as needed
  • Monitor kitchen operations and ensure timely meal preparation and service delivery
  • Maintain records related to food production, stock usage, and kitchen operations
  • Implement best practices in institutional catering and continuous improvement of food services

Qualification Required:

  • Diploma or Certificate in Culinary Arts, Food Production, or Hotel Management from a recognized institution (NIT/VETA preferred)
  • At least five years of professional experience as a chef, including supervisory responsibilities in schools, hotels, or institutional catering environments
  • Strong knowledge of large-scale catering operations, food safety standards, and HACCP principles
  • Proven leadership, planning, and team management abilities
  • Basic computer literacy for menu planning, costing sheets, and inventory management systems
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
