Full Job Description
Senior Accountant Grade III (1 Position) at KCMC University is a professional accounting position responsible for supporting financial management, reporting, budgeting, compliance, and accounting operations within the university. The role requires an experienced accounting professional capable of working independently while handling complex financial responsibilities in accordance with accepted accounting principles, statutory regulations, and university policies.
The successful candidate will support the Director of Finance in managing accounting systems, preparing financial reports, monitoring compliance, supporting audits, supervising financial operations, and coordinating financial planning activities. The position also involves staff supervision, budget monitoring, taxation support, and maintaining accurate financial records.
Key responsibilities include:
- Analysing financial transactions for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting standards
- Preparing, analysing, and interpreting financial reports and statements
- Preparing balance sheets, profit and loss statements, amortization schedules, and depreciation schedules
- Assembling financial data and preparing projections
- Developing, implementing, and documenting accounting systems and procedures
- Establishing and revising accounting policies and operational procedures
- Supervising collection, recording, processing, and consolidation of financial reports and statistics
- Supporting long-range fiscal planning and policy development
- Supervising staff within assigned areas of responsibility
- Reconciling accounts and resolving accounting discrepancies
- Ensuring financial records comply with accounting policies and procedures
- Supporting budget preparation and forecast activities
- Monitoring taxation matters and compliance requirements
- Developing and maintaining financial databases
- Preparing for financial audits and coordinating audit processes
- Ensuring accurate recording and analysis of revenues and expenses
- Assisting in preparation of monthly management reports and budget variance analyses
- Supporting quarterly and annual statutory reporting requirements
- Assisting with staff orientation, training, coaching, and performance management
- Supporting resolution of workplace complaints and operational issues
- Performing additional duties assigned by the Director of Finance or university authorities
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
- Knowledge of accounting practices, auditing standards, and statutory regulations
- Understanding of payroll processing and reporting requirements
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
- Strong ICT skills, including proficiency in MS Office, spreadsheets, accounting software, and financial databases
- Financial reporting and data analysis skills
- Ability to understand and apply university policies and procedures
- Strong planning, organizational, and teamwork skills
- Ability to analyse and reconcile accounting data accurately
- Ability to maintain detailed and accurate financial records
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to build effective working relationships
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and complex assignments
Educational qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy
- Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting or Finance
- Bachelor of Accounting and Finance
- Bachelor of Accounting and Taxation
- Or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution
Professional qualifications and experience requirements include:
- Certified Public Accountant CPA (T) or ACCA qualification
- Registration with the National Board of Accountants and Auditors (NBAA) as a Graduate Accountant (GA)
- Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in accounting from a reputable accounting firm or organization
- Master’s Degree in Accounting, Financial Management, Management Accounting, or related field is an added advantage
