Full Job Description

Maternity Africa is seeking to appoint a qualified and experienced Obstetrician and Gynaecologist/Doctor to join its medical team in Arusha. The organization is looking for a highly accomplished, energetic, and compassionate medical professional who will contribute to delivery of quality maternal healthcare services while ensuring compliance with national healthcare standards and clinical procedures.

The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing medical activities across multiple clinical departments, supervising and mentoring healthcare teams, and ensuring excellent clinical care for mothers and newborns. The role also involves leadership in clinical governance, emergency obstetric care, staff development, medical documentation, and implementation of reproductive health reporting requirements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing medical activities within antenatal care, postnatal wards, labour wards, theatres, newborn nursery, fistula wards, early pregnancy wards, outpatient clinics, and laboratory services as appropriate.
  • Leading and supervising local doctors to ensure high standards of clinical care are maintained and continuously improved.
  • Providing medical opinions and supporting management of outpatients and inpatients referred by the midwifery team.
  • Conducting daily teaching ward rounds and ensuring appropriate patient care plans are implemented according to current clinical guidelines.
  • Attending obstetric emergencies while on duty or on-call and planning ongoing patient management.
  • Performing assisted deliveries, caesarean sections, and other surgical procedures in theatre.
  • Supporting the midwifery team in prevention and management of pregnancy and labour complications.
  • Reviewing and managing patients with early pregnancy complications through medical or surgical interventions.
  • Participating in fistula camps including patient screening, intraoperative care, and postoperative management.
  • Remaining present on-site during working hours within clinical areas.
  • Performing on-call duties during weekends and nights according to the Kivulini Maternity Centre roster.
  • Mentoring and supporting multidisciplinary healthcare teams through collaborative and respectful leadership.
  • Participating actively in clinical staff training and professional development activities.
  • Ensuring all medical documentation is completed accurately and on time.
  • Leading clinical governance initiatives including reporting and review of clinical incidents.
  • Ensuring accurate collection and reporting of reproductive health data and research-related information.
  • Preparing and submitting required reproductive health reports to the Ministry of Health.
  • Managing staff rosters for medical, laboratory, and nurse anaesthetist teams.
  • Performing any additional duties related to the role as assigned by Maternity Africa.

Qualifications Required:

  • Degree in Medicine with a Master’s Degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from an accredited institution.
  • Current registration with the Tanganyika Medical Council (TMC).
  • Minimum of five years professional experience as a Medical Doctor.
  • Strong clinical and professional competence in obstetrics and gynaecology practice.
  • Ability to practice safely and maintain high standards of patient care.
