Nutrition Field Intern
Job Description
SNV Tanzania is seeking a motivated Nutrition Field Intern to support community-based nutrition interventions under its programmes in the Rukwa and Songwe regions. The role focuses on strengthening nutrition outcomes through Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC), promoting dietary diversity, improving household nutrition practices, and supporting nutrition-sensitive agriculture initiatives. Based in Sumbawanga, the position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in nutrition, public health, agriculture, and community development.
The successful candidate will work closely with community health workers, farmer groups, government partners, and project teams to implement nutrition activities, collect field data, support behaviour change interventions, and contribute to improving food security and nutrition outcomes in rural communities.
Responsibilities
- Support planning and implementation of community-based nutrition activities.
- Assist in conducting SBCC sessions, cooking demonstrations, nutrition education, and gender dialogue sessions.
- Facilitate nutrition behaviour change interventions targeting households, farmer groups, and community nutrition groups.
- Promote improved dietary practices, infant and young child feeding (IYCF), workload sharing, and household food budgeting.
- Integrate nutrition and gender messages into agriculture-related activities.
- Support implementation of nutrition-sensitive agriculture approaches.
- Work closely with Community Health Workers (CHWs) to strengthen nutrition education and behaviour change activities.
- Conduct supportive supervision and coaching visits alongside government staff and community facilitators.
- Provide technical support to agriculture interns on nutrition integration.
- Collaborate with agriculture teams to promote production and consumption of nutrient-dense foods through kitchen gardens.
- Collect nutrition-related field data using approved tools.
- Verify data quality and maintain accurate nutrition records.
- Enter and manage data within project systems.
- Support basic data analysis to identify trends, gaps, and improvement opportunities.
- Assist in preparing activity reports, case studies, and success stories.
- Document lessons learned, challenges, and best practices.
- Identify implementation challenges and recommend practical solutions.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Public Health, Community Development, or a related field from a recognized institution.
- Understanding of Nutrition SBCC approaches and community-based nutrition programming.
- Basic knowledge of nutrition-sensitive agriculture and food systems.
- Understanding of gender, social inclusion, and household decision-making factors affecting nutrition outcomes.
- One to two years of relevant experience in agriculture and/or nutrition programmes.
- Experience working with rural communities, Community Health Workers, or farmer groups is an added advantage.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Skills in data collection, data entry, basic analysis, and report writing.
- Experience using Kobo Collect or similar digital data collection tools is an advantage.
- Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and other digital data management tools.
