Job Description

Kitengule Hospital is recruiting a Neonatal Assistant Nursing Officer (ANO) to work in its neonatal services, including NICU and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) units in Dar es Salaam. The role focuses on providing specialized nursing care to newborns, especially premature, low-birth-weight, and critically ill infants, ensuring close monitoring and timely intervention to support survival and healthy development.

This position is suited for a nurse with neonatal experience who can handle high-dependency newborn care, support mothers in newborn care practices, and work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment where early detection and rapid response are critical.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to newborns in NICU, neonatal units, and KMC wards.
  • Monitor vital signs, feeding patterns, growth, and overall clinical condition of neonates.
  • Identify and promptly report any abnormalities or deterioration in newborn condition.
  • Assist in managing premature, low-birth-weight, and critically ill neonates.
  • Administer prescribed medications, oxygen therapy, IV fluids, and other treatments.
  • Assist in neonatal resuscitation and emergency interventions when required.
  • Support and educate mothers and caregivers on breastfeeding, Kangaroo Mother Care, hygiene, and newborn care practices.
  • Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete nursing documentation and reports.
  • Collaborate with pediatricians, general practitioners, and other healthcare staff to ensure optimal neonatal outcomes.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, unit meetings, and continuous professional development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by hospital management.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution.
  • Registration with the Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council (TNMC) and valid practicing license.
  • At least 1 year of experience in NICU, neonatal unit, SCBU, or similar setting.
  • Experience in Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) and supporting premature infants.
  • Training in neonatal care programs such as Essential Newborn Care, Neonatal Resuscitation, or Helping Babies Breathe is an advantage.
  • Strong knowledge of neonatal nursing, infection prevention, breastfeeding support, and newborn monitoring.
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond quickly to emergencies.
  • High professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient safety.
  • Willingness to work shifts, nights, weekends, and on-call duties.
