Ifakara Health Institute is a leading health research organization in Africa recognized for developing, testing, and validating innovations in health research, training, and service delivery. The institute conducts research across biomedical sciences, ecological sciences, health systems, intervention studies, and policy translation aimed at improving public health outcomes.

Through the PfVIMT Project, Ifakara Health Institute is seeking to recruit one Laboratory Assistant to support insectary studies conducted under Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining insectary facilities, rearing mosquito colonies, supporting experimental procedures, and participating in entomological fieldwork in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the implementation of insectary studies following GLP standards
  • Maintain insectary facilities and equipment according to SOPs
  • Ensure all equipment is functioning properly, record daily room temperatures, and report malfunctions to the Principal Investigator and Insectary Manager
  • Maintain all insectary equipment in good condition and ensure proper custody
  • Rear and maintain mosquito colonies
  • Feed adult mosquitoes using human arm or membrane feeding techniques
  • Prepare mosquitoes for experimental procedures as specified in SOPs
  • Conduct mosquito dissections as assigned by the Principal Investigator
  • Accurately record data and maintain laboratory documentation in compliance with GLP standards
  • Participate in training programs related to entomological and GLP practices
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Principal Investigator

Desired Skills

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office packages

Essential Qualifications

  • Certificate in Laboratory Sciences or a related field
  • Understanding of GLP standards and laboratory safety procedures

Required Experience

  • Experience in mosquito rearing, dissection, and feeding assay techniques
  • Experience in conducting entomological fieldwork
  • GLP training and awareness

Preferred Language Skills

  • Fluency in both English and Swahili
