Position: Paediatrician (Neonate)

Location: Liwale, Lindi – Tanzania
Reports To: Project Medical Referent
Employment Type: Full Time

Main Purpose

To provide outpatient and inpatient pediatric care according to updated medical knowledge, MSF clinical protocols, and universal hygiene standards in order to improve newborn and child health outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

General Duties

  • Provide prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for neonatal and pediatric conditions.
  • Deliver integrated newborn and pediatric services through Emergency, OPD, and IPD.
  • Prescribe treatments in accordance with MSF medical protocols.
  • Collaborate with hospital departments such as maternity to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Ensure infection prevention and biohazard control measures are implemented.
  • Provide ongoing training and mentorship to medical and paramedical teams.
  • Inform patients and families about illness, treatment plans, and progress.
  • Conduct daily clinical rounds and determine discharge or referral when necessary.

Quality and Clinical Care Improvement

  • Provide daily clinical management of neonates admitted to the Neonatal Care Unit (NCU).
  • Diagnose and treat neonatal conditions including:
    • Prematurity
    • Neonatal sepsis
    • Birth asphyxia
    • Respiratory distress
    • Hypothermia
    • Low birth weight
    • Neonatal jaundice
  • Perform neonatal procedures such as:
    • Neonatal resuscitation
    • CPAP management
    • IV access and fluid management
    • Antibiotic treatment
    • Feeding protocols (NG feeding and breastfeeding support)
  • Conduct mortality and morbidity reviews and patient safety incident reporting.
  • Implement neonatal care protocols according to MSF and Ministry of Health guidelines.
  • Monitor neonatal medical equipment including incubators, warmers, oxygen concentrators, infusion pumps, CPAP machines, and phototherapy units.
  • Coordinate referrals to higher-level health facilities when necessary.

Training and Capacity Building

  • Conduct bedside teaching and mentoring for doctors, clinical officers, nurses, and midwives.
  • Organize training programs on:
    • Neonatal resuscitation
    • Essential newborn care
    • Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC)
    • Infection prevention
    • Neonatal emergency management
  • Participate in peripheral facility visits to support capacity building.

Monitoring, Data and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate neonatal admission and outcome records.
  • Analyze data to guide clinical quality improvement.
  • Strengthen patient documentation systems using monitoring tools such as NEWS and PEWS.

Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s Degree in Pediatrics from a recognized university.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years certified experience working as a neonatal pediatric doctor.
  • Previous experience with MSF or international NGOs is an advantage.

Knowledge

  • Computer literacy (MS Word and Excel).

Languages

  • English and Swahili required.

Salary and Benefits

  • Basic Salary: TZS 4,250,000 per month (non-negotiable)
  • Seniority Increment:
    • 2% after 12 months of service
    • Additional 2% every subsequent year
  • Additional benefits explained during the interview.
