As part of its commitment to quality journalism and audience engagement, the company is seeking to recruit a qualified and experienced candidate for the position of Business Reporter.

The Business Reporter will be responsible for researching, gathering, writing, and reporting accurate and compelling business news and feature stories. The role requires a highly motivated individual capable of producing factual, well-researched, and audience-focused content that aligns with editorial objectives, journalistic ethics, and the organization’s house style.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Developing, reporting, and writing news and feature stories for assigned publications in finished form with minimal editing requirements.
• Attending assigned news events, conducting interviews, taking notes, verifying facts, and making audio or visual recordings where necessary.
• Writing news stories and feature articles independently or under the direction of the Business Editor or Section Editor.
• Ensuring all written material reflects a thorough understanding of MCL’s editorial policy guidelines, journalistic ethics, and house style.
• Conducting research and providing relevant background information to ensure stories are complete and informative.
• Briefing the News Editor on gathered stories and preparing selected reports within established deadlines.
• Following up on news leads and maintaining close contact with reliable news sources.
• Continuously building and maintaining a strong network of contacts to generate exclusive reports and information.
• Responding promptly and effectively to breaking news situations.
• Ensuring accuracy of facts, content, and writing style in all submitted materials.
• Working closely with photographers to coordinate visual coverage related to assigned stories.

Qualification and Experience

Applicants must possess:

• A Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
• A minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of relevant working experience in journalism or reporting.
• Strong understanding of editorial standards, journalistic ethics, and newsroom operations.
• Excellent research, writing, and news gathering skills.
• Ability to provide detailed background information and produce accurate reports.
• Strong contact building and networking abilities.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
• Prompt response to breaking news events and changing newsroom priorities.
• Strong collaboration skills, particularly when working with photographers and editorial teams.
