As part of its continued growth and commitment to excellence in sports journalism, MCL is seeking to recruit a qualified and experienced candidate for the position of Assistant Sports Editor – Mwananchi.
The Assistant Sports Editor will support the Sports Editor in planning, coordinating, editing, and producing high-quality sports content for both print and digital platforms. The role focuses on ensuring timely, accurate, engaging, and audience-centered sports coverage while maintaining editorial standards and newsroom efficiency.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assisting the Sports Editor in managing the day-to-day operations of the sports desk.
- Coordinating assignments for sports reporters, photographers, and contributors.
- Editing and proofreading sports stories, feature articles, interviews, analyses, and multimedia content before publication.
- Ensuring sports content meets editorial standards, accuracy, fairness, and ethical journalism practices.
- Supporting digital-first publishing strategies to enhance online readership and audience engagement.
- Monitoring breaking sports news and assisting in coordinating timely coverage across all publishing platforms.
- Preparing headlines, captions, and story layouts suitable for both print and digital publishing.
- Assisting in planning coverage for local and international sporting events, tournaments, and special features.
- Working closely with designers, photographers, and digital teams to produce compelling sports content packages.
- Monitoring audience trends, analytics, and competitor activities to improve sports content performance.
- Mentoring junior reporters and interns to strengthen reporting and writing skills.
- Standing in for the Sports Editor during absence when required.
- Ensuring timely submission and publication of sports content according to newsroom deadlines.
- Maintaining professional relationships with sports stakeholders, clubs, federations, athletes, and agencies.
Qualification and Experience
Applicants must possess:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, Media Studies, or a related field.
- A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in sports journalism or editorial work.
- Strong knowledge of local and international sports.
- Experience in digital media publishing and multimedia storytelling.
- Excellent writing and editing skills in both English and Swahili.
- Familiarity with newsroom systems, digital publishing platforms, and content management tools.
- Strong editorial judgment and news analysis skills.
- Good leadership, communication, and coordination abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work under pressure while meeting strict deadlines.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
