Superintendent – Geotechnical at Barrick (North Mara Gold Mine)

Barrick is seeking an experienced Superintendent – Geotechnical to lead the Geotechnical discipline at North Mara Gold Mine in Kahama, Tanzania. This full-time leadership role is responsible for providing geotechnical planning, design, and ground control solutions that protect both open pit and underground mining operations while supporting safe and efficient production.

The successful candidate will manage the site geotechnical team, oversee ground control standards, geotechnical monitoring systems, mine stability assessments, budgeting, and technical projects. Working closely with mining, planning, geology, and processing teams, the Superintendent will ensure geotechnical risks are effectively identified, managed, and mitigated throughout the Life of Mine.

Responsibilities include:

• Provide geotechnical input for open pit and underground mine planning.
• Maintain the Ground Control Management Plan, TARPs, and Ground Support Standards.
• Lead and supervise the site Geotechnical team.
• Manage geotechnical budgets, staffing, procurement, and consultant activities.
• Design underground stopes, slopes, pillars, and ground support systems.
• Conduct geotechnical hazard assessments for open pit and underground operations.
• Develop and maintain underground and open pit stability monitoring systems.
• Maintain 3D geotechnical block models and Life of Mine stress models.
• Perform raise bore, pillar, and backfill stability analyses.
• Analyze rock mass, structural logging, and hydrogeological data.
• Review and validate ground support designs and compliance.
• Conduct ground control audits, inspections, and quality assurance programs.
• Monitor ground support consumables and prepare monthly usage reports.
• Lead ground support trials and evaluate their performance.
• Investigate and report significant ground fall incidents.
• Prepare weekly and monthly geotechnical reports.
• Promote workplace health, safety, and compliance with statutory regulations.
• Support training and development of Geotechnical Engineers.
• Perform numerical and kinematic stability analyses using industry software.
• Escalate geotechnical risks and recommend corrective actions to management.

Qualifications Required:

• Bachelor of Science or Engineering in Geotechnical Engineering, or Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, or Geology with a Master’s in Geotechnical Engineering.
• Leadership or Business Management qualifications are an added advantage.
• Minimum 5 years of leadership experience on a mine site at Senior Engineer level or above.
• At least 5 years of underground mining experience.
• At least 5 years of open pit mining experience.
• Strong understanding of mining processes and ground control practices.
• Knowledge of open pit and underground interaction challenges.
• Proficiency in Map3D, Phase2, Dips, Slide3, UnWedge, RocData, GEM4D, and mine design software.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
• Ability to drive continuous improvement and implement technical changes.
