Job Description

NBC Tanzania is seeking a qualified and analytical professional to join its credit function as a Branch Credit Analyst in Dar es Salaam. The role is responsible for independently reviewing, challenging and approving or declining credit applications within delegated lending authority while balancing business growth with prudent credit risk management.

The successful candidate will assess credit proposals, identify risks and mitigating factors, ensure compliance with lending policies and provide constructive guidance to Credit Analysts. The position also involves monitoring portfolio performance, reviewing collateral and security arrangements, supporting credit governance and maintaining high standards of credit decision-making.

  • Review, evaluate and approve or decline credit applications within delegated lending authority.

  • Assess credit proposals submitted by Credit Analysts for accuracy, completeness and quality.

  • Conduct sound financial analysis and credit risk evaluation.

  • Exercise independent judgment when sanctioning credit facilities.

  • Identify key risks, mitigating factors and conditions required before approval.

  • Ensure credit decisions comply with Retail Credit Policy, risk appetite frameworks and regulatory requirements.

  • Escalate applications that exceed delegated authority limits.

  • Return or decline incomplete or deficient applications with clear reasons and actionable feedback.

  • Monitor portfolio concentration risks, industry exposures and emerging portfolio trends.

  • Maintain controls to prevent fraud, misrepresentation and policy breaches.

  • Verify that restricted customers and suspended branches are not processed.

  • Ensure required employer and customer verification procedures are completed.

  • Participate in Credit Committees and other approval forums when required.

  • Provide guidance and coaching to Credit Analysts handling complex or high-risk applications.

  • Ensure consistency and adherence to credit underwriting standards.

  • Support improvements to credit assessment methodologies, tools and processes.

  • Review structured lending and secured credit proposals.

  • Assess the suitability and effectiveness of proposed risk mitigants.

  • Determine appropriate facility structures, repayment terms, pricing recommendations and risk mitigation requirements.

  • Ensure collateral and security arrangements are adequate and enforceable.

  • Approve conditions relating to collateral perfection, legal documentation and insurance coverage.

  • Ensure all conditions precedent are fulfilled before credit facilities are disbursed.

  • Work with Legal, Treasury, Security Management, Branch Network and Business Units on credit matters.

  • Ensure alignment on facility structure, collateral, documentation and disbursement readiness.

  • Provide timely and constructive feedback on credit decisions.

  • Monitor approved credit facilities and identify emerging portfolio risks.

  • Support portfolio reviews, risk remediation and early-warning initiatives.

  • Contribute to credit policy development and periodic policy reviews.

  • Support risk appetite assessments and improvements to credit governance frameworks.

  • Recommend actions to strengthen portfolio quality and manage risk exposure.

  • Keep up to date with regulatory developments, policy changes and credit risk management practices.

  • Support internal and external audit activities.

  • Maintain comprehensive approval records for auditability and transparency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in Finance, Banking, Business Administration, Economics or a related field.

  • At least one year of relevant experience in Credit Risk, Credit Underwriting, Lending Operations, Banking or related financial services.

  • Knowledge of credit risk assessment and underwriting.

  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.

  • Good communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship management abilities.

  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and credit systems.

  • Knowledge of credit risk principles.

  • Digital familiarity.

  • Experience working in a similar environment.

  • Openness to change.

  • Strong reasoning skills.
