Job Description

Hannah Bennie School (HBS) was established to provide children in Kigamboni with access to high-quality English-medium education close to home. As part of its commitment to student safety and operational excellence, the school maintains a dedicated transportation system that ensures reliable and secure travel for students and staff.

To support the efficient operation of its growing fleet, HBS is seeking an experienced and results-oriented Workshop Manager to lead its vehicle maintenance and repair operations. The successful candidate will oversee the school’s workshop activities, ensure the roadworthiness of all vehicles, manage technical staff, and implement maintenance strategies that maximize fleet availability and safety.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise the in-house vehicle workshop, with primary responsibility for the school bus fleet
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee preventive maintenance schedules, repairs, overhauls, and roadworthiness inspections for all school vehicles
  • Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults and approve appropriate corrective actions
  • Manage workshop personnel, including mechanics, auto-electricians, apprentices, and support staff
  • Coordinate staff schedules, training, performance evaluations, and workforce development initiatives
  • Control spare-parts inventory, workshop tools, and consumables while approving purchase requisitions and evaluating suppliers
  • Maintain accurate digital job cards, maintenance records, service histories, and cost-per-vehicle reports
  • Work closely with the Transport Manager to optimize vehicle availability, respond to breakdowns, and minimize downtime
  • Ensure full compliance with LATRA roadworthiness requirements, OSHA workplace safety regulations, and environmental standards
  • Prepare and manage the workshop budget, monitor repair expenditures, warranty claims, and outsourced maintenance costs
  • Develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance workshop efficiency and fleet reliability
  • Prepare maintenance and performance reports for management review

Qualification Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • VETA Full Technician Certificate with substantial relevant experience will also be considered
  • At least three years of experience managing a vehicle workshop, preferably involving PSV, school buses, or heavy vehicles
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems, suspension systems, and vehicle diagnostics
  • Experience using modern diagnostic equipment and workshop management systems
  • Strong leadership, planning, team management, and supplier relationship management skills
  • Intermediate to advanced computer proficiency, including workshop management software, diagnostic tools, and reporting systems
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
  • High level of professionalism, safety awareness, and attention to detail
