Job Description

The Principal, Tailings role at AngloGold Ashanti in Geita is a senior geotechnical engineering position responsible for ensuring the safe design, operation, monitoring, and long-term stability of tailings storage facilities. These are large mining waste containment structures that require strict engineering control due to their high safety and environmental risk profile. The role ensures compliance with international standards, corporate requirements, and regulatory frameworks throughout the full lifecycle of these assets.

This position provides technical authority over tailings infrastructure at site level and involves close coordination with external governance bodies such as the Engineer of Record (EoR) and the Independent Tailings Review Board (ITRB). It ensures alignment with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) while supporting operational decision-making, risk management, and long-term mine planning.

Responsibilities:

• Provide technical leadership for tailings storage facilities including dams, sediment systems, and related geotechnical infrastructure
• Ensure compliance with GISTM and international standards such as ICOLD, ANCOLD, CDA, and MAC guidelines
• Oversee full lifecycle management of tailings facilities from design through construction, operation, monitoring, remediation, and closure
• Conduct inspections, audits, and governance reviews of tailings storage facilities
• Monitor geotechnical performance indicators such as slope stability, seepage, deformation, and pore pressure
• Engage with Engineer of Record (EoR), Independent Tailings Review Board (ITRB), and internal governance teams
• Lead risk identification, mitigation, and remediation of tailings infrastructure
• Support long-term mine planning including tailings capacity and closure strategies
• Contribute to cost optimization and value engineering initiatives
• Participate in multi-disciplinary engineering studies for new and existing TSF designs
• Support development and supervision of site tailings engineering teams
• Ensure compliance reporting and communication to senior management

Qualification needed:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering
• Postgraduate qualification in Geotechnical Engineering (advantageous)
• Minimum 10 years’ experience in tailings or geotechnical engineering
• Proven experience in design, review, and management of tailings storage facilities
• Strong knowledge of GISTM and tailings governance frameworks
• Familiarity with ICOLD, ANCOLD, CDA, and MAC engineering guidelines
• Experience in geotechnical risk analysis, dam stability, and monitoring systems
• Ability to interpret complex engineering data and make technical decisions
• Experience in lifecycle management of large-scale mining geotechnical systems
• Strong capability in value engineering and cost optimization
