Motor Vehicle Mechanic
Job Description
Hannah Bennie School (HBS) was established to provide children in Kigamboni with access to high-quality English-medium education close to home. To support its educational mission, the school maintains a reliable transportation system that ensures students and staff travel safely and efficiently every day.
As part of its commitment to operational excellence and fleet safety, HBS is seeking a skilled and experienced Motor Vehicle Mechanic to join its transport and maintenance team. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the school fleet in excellent operating condition, minimizing vehicle downtime, and ensuring compliance with all applicable safety and roadworthiness standards.
Responsibilities:
- Carry out scheduled servicing, maintenance, repairs, and overhauls on the school fleet, including buses, vans, and light vehicles
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic faults using appropriate diagnostic tools and procedures
- Repair or replace engines, transmissions, braking systems, suspension components, and auxiliary systems
- Maintain accurate service records and perform quality inspections before vehicles are returned to service
- Inspect vehicles to ensure compliance with safety requirements and LATRA roadworthiness standards
- Maintain workshop tools, equipment, and spare parts inventory in good working condition
- Adhere to workshop safety procedures, environmental regulations, and proper waste-handling practices
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior mechanics, trainees, and apprentices
- Respond promptly to breakdowns and emergency repair requirements
- Recommend preventive maintenance measures to improve fleet reliability and performance
Qualification Required:
- VETA Trade Test Grade I or II, or a Diploma in Automotive Mechanics
- Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is an added advantage
- At least three years of hands-on experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, preferably involving PSV or heavy vehicles
- Ability to service and repair both petrol and diesel engines
- Knowledge of modern vehicle diagnostic tools, systems, and software
- Strong understanding of automotive electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety standards
- Basic computer literacy for using diagnostic software and digital maintenance records
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
