Job Description

The Geologist 2 – Exploration role at AngloGold Ashanti in Geita is a mid-level technical geology position focused on mineral exploration and resource discovery. It involves designing and executing exploration programs aimed at identifying new gold targets, refining geological models, and supporting decision-making for drilling campaigns within and outside existing mining concessions. The role sits within the exploration team and contributes directly to expanding the mine’s resource base.

This position is heavily analytical and field-driven, combining geological interpretation, 3D modelling, and hands-on exploration work. The geologist is expected to integrate multiple datasets such as geochemistry, geophysics, structural mapping, and drilling results to build predictive models and prioritize exploration targets. It also involves supervising field activities and ensuring compliance with safety and exploration standards during data collection and drilling operations.

Responsibilities:

• Lead geological interpretation sessions to define structural, lithological, and alteration models for exploration targeting
• Develop predictive geological models using geochemistry, geophysics, structural data, and drilling results
• Conduct geological risk assessments and propose mitigation strategies for exploration projects
• Verify and validate geological models developed by junior geologists
• Identify data gaps and design drilling or mapping programs to address them
• Integrate multi-disciplinary datasets into exploration targeting and ranking processes
• Recommend next-phase exploration activities such as drilling, geochemical surveys, or downhole logging
• Ensure projects meet stage-gate requirements (reconnaissance, evaluation, resource development)
• Conduct field audits to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards
• Supervise drilling activities including hole design, orientation, sampling quality, and execution
• Approve sampling intervals, logging standards, and geological classification systems
• Make operational decisions on drilling progress, including adjustments or termination of holes

Qualification needed:

• Bachelor of Science in Geology or Advanced Diploma in Geology or related field
• 3–5 years of underground geological experience
• 3–5 years of mineral exploration experience, preferably gold exploration
• Proficiency in geological software such as ArcGIS, Datamine, or Leapfrog
• Strong knowledge of geological data interpretation and 3D geological modelling
• Understanding of mineralisation systems, especially within greenstone belt environments
• Experience in exploration methodologies and modern geological technologies
• Ability to interpret complex geological datasets and support exploration decision-making
