The successful candidate will report directly to the Group Chief Operating Officer and will play a strategic leadership role in managing South Africa’s national ports system.

Position Purpose
TNPA is mandated to own, manage, control, and administer South Africa’s commercial ports in accordance with the National Ports Act of 2005. The Authority is responsible for ensuring efficient and cost-effective port operations through infrastructure planning, development, maintenance, and regulatory oversight.
The Chief Executive will lead the transformation of TNPA from a division of Transnet into an autonomous State-Owned Company (SOC Ltd). This includes strengthening private sector participation, improving operational performance, and positioning South African ports as globally competitive gateways for Sub-Saharan trade and investment.
TNPA manages a portfolio of eight commercial ports located along South Africa’s coastline. The appointed candidate will be required to maintain operational presence across all port jurisdictions.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Planning
- Lead integrated planning across the national ports system.
- Drive infrastructure development and investment in people and technology.
- Promote sustainability and long-term operational efficiency.
Financial Management
- Oversee financial performance and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Maintain business sustainability through sound financial governance.
Operational Oversight
- Supervise port services, infrastructure, facilities, and real estate.
- Manage cargo handling and cruise operations.
- Promote continuous improvement in safety, quality, and cost efficiency.
Stakeholder Management
- Build collaborative relationships with government entities, regulators, labour unions, private sector stakeholders, and port communities.
- Enhance cooperation across Transnet operating divisions.
Governance and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with financial, environmental, labour, safety, maritime, and security regulations.
- Support the Board in maintaining strong corporate governance frameworks.
Environmental Stewardship
- Implement environmentally sustainable practices across all ports.
- Lead climate risk mitigation initiatives.
- Oversee corporate social investment programmes for port communities.
Technology and Innovation
- Drive digital transformation initiatives including smart port technologies and automation.
- Strengthen cybersecurity and data-driven operational capabilities.
Leadership and Talent Development
- Lead executive management teams.
- Promote organisational values including accountability, inclusivity, and ethical leadership.
- Oversee human capital development strategies.
Public and Policy Engagement
- Engage with policy-makers and public institutions.
- Advocate for policies that enhance port performance and national trade competitiveness.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must possess one of the following:
- A relevant Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Maritime Studies, Engineering, Finance, or Logistics (NQF Level 7),
OR - A Postgraduate Diploma in a related field (NQF Level 8)
Additional Advantage:
- Postgraduate qualification in Executive Management or Leadership Development (NQF Level 8)
Applicants should also have:
- Minimum 15 years of operational experience
- At least 10 years in leadership roles
- Minimum 5 years at executive management level
- Experience in large, complex organisations with national or international operations
- Exposure to capital investment management, public-private partnerships, or corporate restructuring
