Job Description

The Mining Manager role at Tembo Nickel is a senior technical and operational leadership position responsible for guiding an underground nickel mining project from construction phase into full production at the Kabanga site in Kagera. The focus is on building a safe, efficient, and fully functional underground mining operation while managing contractors, technical teams, and large-scale infrastructure development.

In practical terms, this role sits between project execution and operational mining leadership. You are responsible for ensuring that the underground mine is properly established (declines, shafts, ventilation systems, backfill plants), that mining contractors deliver according to plan, and that the transition from construction to steady production happens without operational gaps or safety failures. You also build and lead the mine’s internal technical services team, covering mine engineering, geology, and surveying functions.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead mobilization and setup of underground mining operations, including workforce and equipment deployment.
  • Oversee development of key infrastructure such as boxcut, decline, ventilation shafts, and backfill systems.
  • Coordinate mining contractor activities and ensure alignment with project timelines and technical specifications.
  • Build and manage the owner’s technical services team (mining engineering, geology, surveying).
  • Manage interface between EPCM/construction teams and mining operations to ensure smooth handover of infrastructure.
  • Develop, implement, and audit standard operating procedures (SOPs) for underground mining and maintenance activities.
  • Plan and control production sequencing, including stoping and backfilling operations, to meet physical output targets.
  • Enforce health, safety, environmental, and localization standards, ensuring compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage operational budgets, review contractor claims, and control cost variances.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related field.
  • At least 20 years of senior underground mining leadership experience.
  • Strong background in mechanized underground mining (decline development and stoping).
  • Experience managing mining contractors and large-scale mining projects.
  • Experience setting up technical services teams in remote or developing regions.
  • Familiarity with EPCM-construction to operations transition in mining projects.
  • Strong knowledge of underground mine design, scheduling, and cost control.
  • Ability to manage budgets, validate contractor claims, and ensure operational efficiency.

In summary, this is a high-level mine operations leadership role focused on building and running a large underground mining operation, with heavy emphasis on project transition, contractor management, safety systems, and production delivery.
