Originally established as Iringa Lutheran College in 1993–1994, the University of Iringa provided courses leading to a degree in theology. A course leading to the Bachelor of Business Administration degree was taken by the first undergraduate students in 1995–96. When Iringa University College (IUCO), Tanzania’s first privately accredited university, joined Tumaini University in 1998, they were awarded their degrees. Iringa University College is one of the member colleges of Tumaini University, which was rebranded as Tumaini University Makumira in 2010. In 2013, Tumaini University Makumira Iringa University College became the University of Iringa (UoI), gaining full academic recognition.
Admission Regulations:
To be considered for admission to any of the University of Iringa’s programs, applicants must meet the minimal prerequisites for admission listed for each program.
If a candidate meets any of the following criteria, they may be admitted to the University of Iringa’s certificate and diploma programs without a degree:
1. Admission Requirements for Non-Degree Programmes (Certificate and Diploma)
Certificate
- Holders who passed the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) with at least four (4) non-religious subjects.
Diploma
- Having either a Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with four “D” passes in nonreligious subjects and a GPA of 2.0 or better, or an Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with one principal pass and two subsidiary passes.
2. Admission Requirements for Degree Programmes
If a candidate meets any of the following criteria, they will be given consideration for admission to the University of Iringa’s first-degree program:
- completed coursework before 2014 at the “A” level: Two primary passes with a total of 4.0 points in two subjects (where A = 5; B = 4; C = 3; D = 2; E = 1; S = 0.5) are required for admission to the relevant program.
- completed coursework in 2014 and 2015 at the “A” level: Two principal passes (‘C’ and above) with a total of 4.0 points from two subjects (where A = 5; B+ = 4; B = 3; C = 2; D = 1; E = 0.5) are required for admission to the appropriate program.
- completed “A” level coursework beginning in 2016: two principal passes in two courses (where A = 5; B = 4; C = 3; D = 2; E = 1; S = 0.5) with a total score of 4.0 points, which determines admission to the program.
Postgraduate Diploma
- A bachelor’s degree or postgraduate certificate from an accredited university with a minimum GPA of 2.0 or a C grade average may occasionally be required for admission to the program.
Master Degree
To be eligible for admission to the master’s program, a candidate must meet one of the following requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, with a B grade average or 2.7 GPA from an authorized university; OR
- A postgraduate degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or a B grade average in the relevant field; OR
- A professional degree plus additional training that shows research skills and relevant work experience.
Upon examination by TCU, applicants with undergraduate degrees from countries other than Tanzania who wish to be admitted into the program must have obtained grades comparable to those listed above. To be considered for admission, international applicants from nations where English is not the primary language of instruction must have their diplomas and transcripts translated into English.
Mode of Application:
An online admissions system is used to process each application (OLAS). You can access all application procedures using the online system. The UoI website, www.uoi.ac.tz, also has the URL.
All applicants must use the OLAS to apply for undergraduate programs (direct and similar qualifications), postgraduate programs, and non-degree programs (certificate and diploma).
