MSF is currently recruiting qualified professionals for the position of Patient Support Supervisor to strengthen patient care and community health support within its project operations in Tanzania.

Position Details

Job Title: Patient Support Supervisor

Job Purpose:

The Patient Support Supervisor will work closely with the Project Medical Referent to oversee the implementation of patient support activities in accordance with MSF standards and protocols. The role focuses on empowering patients to better understand and manage their illness and treatment beyond the purely medical aspects of care.

This includes strengthening counselling services, improving access to care, and ensuring effective patient education and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Support Strategy and Implementation

  • Assist in assessing patient support needs and developing appropriate strategies aligned with project medical priorities.
  • Support the development of patient education tools such as counselling protocols and health promotion messages.
  • Ensure the effective implementation and monitoring of patient support activities according to MSF standards.
  • Collaborate with other project departments and partner organizations involved in patient support services.

Patient Support and Access to Care

  • Support differentiated care models for stable patients living in remote or hard-to-reach areas.
  • Coordinate patient support interventions including:
    • Transport support
    • Nutritional support linkages
    • Treatment literacy sessions
  • Monitor systems for tracing patients who miss treatment appointments, including community follow-up mechanisms.
  • Strengthen community-based health education initiatives to promote early health-seeking behavior.

Community Linkages and Referral Systems

  • Strengthen referral systems between health facilities and community structures.
  • Ensure compliance with referral pathways and referral criteria.
  • Coordinate with Ministry of Health counterparts to align strategies with district health priorities.

Quality of Counselling and Patient Protection

  • Ensure culturally appropriate counselling that considers stigma, gender dynamics, and local beliefs.
  • Monitor accurate documentation of counselling sessions and patient support activities.
  • Identify and report protection risks such as gender-based violence, stigma-related abuse, or neglect.
  • Provide on-the-job coaching to improve counselling quality and confidentiality practices.

Team Management and Supervision

  • Supervise patient support staff including counsellors, social workers, peer educators, and outreach workers.
  • Plan staff schedules and organize daily activities.
  • Provide supportive supervision and technical guidance to ensure high-quality service delivery.

Data Monitoring and Reporting

  • Ensure proper data collection and reporting of patient support activities.
  • Monitor the use of standardized tools such as:
    • Patient Support Registers
    • Counselling Session Logbooks
    • Referral Tracking Forms
  • Compile reports and analyse data to improve programme performance.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Applicants must have a University degree in one of the following fields:

  • Psychology
  • Counselling
  • Social Sciences
  • Communication
  • Health Promotion
  • Educational Sciences
  • Nursing

Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience working in NGO settings (preferred).
  • Proven experience in supervising or training team members.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English and Swahili is essential.

Technical Skills

  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
