Reconciliation Officer at NBC Tanzania

NBC Tanzania is seeking a Reconciliation Officer to perform accurate and timely reconciliations across suspense, digital, Nostro, settlement, and other general ledger accounts. The role is responsible for identifying discrepancies, investigating outstanding items, maintaining proper documentation, and ensuring that reconciliation activities support strong financial controls and regulatory compliance.

The successful candidate will work closely with branches, finance, operations, technology teams, and other stakeholders to investigate and resolve exceptions. The position also contributes to loss prevention, operational risk management, audit support, and continuous improvement while ensuring reconciliation activities are completed within established deadlines and control requirements.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily reconciliations of assigned accounts and products.

  

• Identify unmatched, aged, and exceptional transactions promptly.

• Investigate discrepancies using source documents, transaction reports, system postings, and branch submissions.

  

• Recommend appropriate corrective actions for reconciliation differences.

• Work with branches, Operations, Finance, Technology, and other teams to obtain explanations and supporting evidence.

  

• Validate the ownership, ageing, correctness, and risk impact of reconciling items.

• Escalate material, long-outstanding, or high-risk exceptions to the Supervisor or Manager.

  

• Maintain reconciliation templates, supporting evidence, and exception trackers.

• Provide guidance to process owners and branch teams on reconciliation requirements and balancing procedures.

• Maintain complete and retrievable reconciliation records in accordance with retention requirements.

• Identify control weaknesses, operational risks, unusual trends, and potential fraud indicators.

• Comply with KYC, AML, sanctions, regulatory, and internal control requirements.

• Support internal and external audits by providing reconciliation evidence and explanations.

• Prepare or support management reports covering reconciliation status, outstanding items, ageing, root causes, and action plans.

• Ensure reconciliation activities remain within approved mandates and escalation frameworks.

• Keep up to date with NBC policies, procedures, reconciliation standards, and operational risk requirements.

• Maintain compliance with information security, confidentiality, user access, password, and segregation-of-duties requirements.

• Meet agreed performance, learning, and development objectives.

• Identify skills gaps, training needs, and opportunities for process improvement.

• Apply feedback and lessons learned to improve reconciliation quality, timeliness, and stakeholder service.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma in Banking, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.

• At least 1 year of relevant experience in reconciliation, banking operations, finance operations, branch operations, or a related control function.

• Sound understanding of suspense, digital, settlement, Nostro, and general ledger account operations.

• Knowledge of reconciliation processes and exception management.

• Strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to interpret transaction data and identify the root causes of discrepancies.

• High level of attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness.

• Good understanding of accounting principles, bank reconciliation concepts, internal controls, and operational risk management.

• Knowledge of relevant banking regulations, KYC, AML, sanctions, and compliance requirements.

• Ability to manage multiple reconciliation activities within strict daily, weekly, and monthly deadlines.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with different departments and stakeholders.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

• Intermediate to advanced Excel skills, including filtering, pivot tables, lookups, and basic data analysis.

• Clear written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to explain exceptions, risks, and required corrective actions professionally.
