KPMG East Africa, on behalf of its client, a leading not-for-profit organization in Tanzania’s health sector, is seeking an experienced Executive Director to provide strategic and visionary leadership. The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding the organization’s next phase of growth, sustainability, innovation, and impact while ensuring alignment with national and global health priorities.
This senior executive position requires extensive leadership experience in complex health-related organizations, strong fundraising and resource mobilization capabilities, and a deep understanding of Tanzania’s health systems. The Executive Director will work closely with the Board, government, donors, development partners, research institutions, and other stakeholders to strengthen the organization’s position as a trusted health-sector partner.
Responsibilities

Provide visionary leadership in implementing the organization’s Strategic Plan.

Align organizational strategies with national and global health priorities.

Translate Board decisions into actionable strategies and annual operational plans.

Establish measurable performance outcomes and monitor organizational performance.

Strengthen technical excellence, institutional growth, innovation, and policy influence.
-
Drive organizational transformation and institutional development.
-
Oversee financial performance, resource allocation, sustainability, and long-term organizational viability.

Develop and diversify the organization’s funding and portfolio base.

Build strategic partnerships with donors, governments, development partners, philanthropic institutions, the private sector, and funding agencies.

Lead resource mobilization through grants, contracts, endowments, partnerships, and innovative financing mechanisms.

Oversee the development of funding proposals, investment cases, and partnership frameworks.
-
Ensure financial prudence, accountability, transparency, and effective risk management.

Provide quality financial information to Executive Management and the Board.

Oversee the organization’s research and innovation agenda.

Promote digital transformation, technology adoption, research commercialization, and strategic infrastructure development.

Lead and develop the Senior Management Team.

Build a motivated, capable, inclusive, and high-performing workforce.

Champion leadership development, succession planning, staff wellbeing, and performance excellence.

Ensure compliance with governance frameworks, statutory obligations, policies, and standard operating procedures.

Promote organizational integrity and zero tolerance for misconduct.

Represent the organization nationally, regionally, and internationally.

Strengthen relationships with government, donors, development partners, academia, research institutions, and philanthropies.

Position the organization as a trusted policy advisor and technical partner in the health sector.
Qualifications
-
Master’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Medicine, Life Sciences, Health Economics, or a related discipline.

PhD is an added advantage.

At least 15 years of progressively responsible leadership experience.

At least 5 years of executive-level experience.
-
Experience leading complex organizations such as health programmes, academic institutions, health research organizations, or large health-related NGOs.

Strong organizational governance and financial oversight experience.

Proven ability to develop strategic partnerships and mobilize resources.

Strong understanding of Tanzania’s health systems.
-
Experience working with multilateral donors and international development partners.
-
Experience leading organizational transformation and institutional development.

Strong fundraising and resource mobilization capabilities.

Demonstrated visionary and strategic leadership.

Strong operational management and performance excellence skills.
-
Excellent stakeholder engagement and external relations capabilities.
-
Experience engaging effectively with the Government of Tanzania, donors, development partners, and other key stakeholders.

Strong research and innovation oversight capabilities.

Strong knowledge of governance, compliance, and risk management.

Demonstrated accountability, collaboration, and integrity.
