Job Description

The U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam is seeking an Economic Specialist to join the Political and Economic (P-E) Section. The successful candidate will analyze and report on Tanzania’s economic environment, including investment, trade, mining, infrastructure, transportation, aviation, and macroeconomic developments, while supporting U.S. government priorities and engagement with Tanzanian stakeholders.

The position requires strong knowledge of Tanzania’s political, economic, and social environment, as well as the ability to develop professional contacts across government, business, academia, international organizations, and civil society. The Economic Specialist will also prepare analytical reports, support official visits and meetings, provide economic advice, and represent the P-E Section at relevant events and working groups.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead efforts to understand, analyze, advise, and report on investment, trade, mining and critical minerals, strategic competition, aviation, transportation, infrastructure, macroeconomic, and East African Community issues.

  • Support work relating to energy, conservation, agriculture, tourism, and environment, science, technology, and health.

  • Develop and maintain contacts within government, the private sector, academia, international and multilateral institutions, and civil society.

  • Facilitate U.S. Embassy engagements with key contacts and support official visits throughout Tanzania.

  • Draft diplomatic notes for official meetings and initiatives.

  • Prepare and maintain biographic information on Tanzanian government officials.

  • Provide interpretation during official meetings and events when required.

  • Draft and distribute substantive notes from official meetings.

  • Research and maintain reports from local and international organizations covering Tanzania’s economic issues and developments.

  • Monitor local media and political and economic developments and trends.

  • Prepare analytical updates, briefing memoranda, reporting cables, and other economic reports.

  • Work with the Political-Economic and Protocol Sections to develop appropriate guest lists for official events.

  • Plan and execute official meetings and travel within Tanzania.

  • Represent the Political-Economic Section and U.S. Mission at working groups, conferences, meetings, and other functions.

  • Brief and advise the Political-Economic Section, Front Office, interagency partners, and Washington on economic developments and trends.

  • Provide advice on economic and development assistance priorities in Tanzania.

  • Serve as a Grants Officer Representative for economic development-related grants.

  • Support cooperation between the Embassy, government, and civil society organizations.

  • Assist in identifying and nominating participants for U.S. government-funded training and exchange programmes.

  • Perform other related duties and provide support to other section portfolios when required.

Qualifications required include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Political Science, International Relations, or a related field.

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in private-sector and/or public-sector economic analysis.

  • Level IV fluency in English, including speaking, reading, and writing, with the ability to translate English.

  • Level IV fluency in Swahili, including speaking, reading, and writing, with the ability to translate Swahili.

  • Detailed knowledge of Tanzania’s political, economic, and social structure.

  • Advanced knowledge of economic concepts and analytical methods.

  • Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment when developing and maintaining professional contacts.

  • Strong ability to synthesize complex information, events, and trends into concise written and oral reports.

  • Proficiency in using computers, smartphones, and tablets.

  • Experience drafting, editing, and compiling information using Microsoft Office tools.
