Driver at UNESCO

UNESCO is seeking a qualified and experienced Driver to provide safe, reliable, and professional transportation services to staff, officials, visitors, and other authorized personnel in Dar es Salaam. The position also involves supporting official field trips and ensuring that assigned vehicles are properly maintained and ready for use.

In addition to driving responsibilities, the successful candidate will assist with vehicle documentation, maintenance coordination, airport reception, delivery of official documents, and selected administrative duties. The role requires flexibility, strong knowledge of road safety, and the ability to work professionally under different traffic and working conditions.

Responsibilities

• Drive UNESCO staff, officials, visitors, and other authorized personnel using official vehicles.

• Provide safe, reliable, and timely transportation services.

  

• Meet officials and visitors at the airport.

• Assist with basic visa and customs formalities when required.

  

• Drive during official field trips.

• Determine appropriate routes and journey times while following security procedures.

  

• Work flexible, long, or irregular hours when required, including weekends.

• Maintain accurate daily vehicle logs.

  

• Arrange minor vehicle repairs and coordinate major repairs when necessary.

• Ensure vehicles receive timely oil changes.

• Regularly check tyres, brakes, and water levels.

• Keep assigned vehicles clean and in good working condition.

• Support vehicle maintenance planning and reporting.

• Arrange vehicle inspections and repairs at designated workshops.

• Ensure vehicles have all required documents and supplies.

• Monitor vehicle insurance and tax formalities.

• Report accidents accurately and promptly.

• Assist with communication equipment such as HF/VHF radios and satellite phones.

• Deliver and collect mail and documents.

• Perform photocopying and binding.

• Assist with filing.

• Pay certain office bills when assigned.

• Cover the duties of other drivers during leave.

• Perform other activities required to support the work team.

Qualifications Required

• Minimum High School Certificate.

• Valid national driver’s licence.

• Passenger Service Vehicle driving training from a reputable institution is an added advantage.

• Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience.

• Fluency in English and Kiswahili, both written and spoken.

• Proven ability to drive safely and comply with local traffic regulations.

• Strong communication skills.

• Experience driving different vehicle types and models.

• Ability to perform minor vehicle repairs.

• Knowledge of radio, email, telephone, and related applications.

• Knowledge of United Nations vehicle rules and regulations.

• Good planning and organisational skills.

• Strong accountability and teamwork.
