Maintenance Technician – Production (Technical Workshop Paint Technician) at Kenya Airways PLC

Kenya Airways PLC is seeking a skilled Maintenance Technician – Production (Technical Workshop Paint Technician) to prepare and apply protective and decorative coatings to aircraft components. The successful candidate will ensure that painting work meets required technical, quality, safety, and regulatory standards while supporting the maintenance and presentation of Kenya Airways aircraft.

The role involves surface preparation, paint application, defect correction, equipment maintenance, quality inspection, and safe handling of paints and related materials. The successful candidate should have practical painting experience, strong attention to detail, knowledge of aircraft materials and coatings, and the ability to work safely in technical workshop environments.

Responsibilities include:

• Remove old paint, corrosion, and contaminants using appropriate chemical and mechanical methods.
• Clean, mask, sand, and chemically treat surfaces before painting.
• Apply paint using appropriate techniques and procedures to achieve the required finish on aircraft components.
• Work with epoxy, polyurethane, enamel, chromate-based, and other applicable coating products.
• Identify and rectify paint defects such as runs, sags, fisheyes, and foreign object debris contamination.
• Diagnose and resolve problems related to paint application, adhesion, and finish quality.
• Inspect and document completed work to ensure compliance with internal procedures, OEM manuals, and applicable regulatory standards.
• Check that tools and equipment are safe, tested, usable, and within their required calibration dates.
• Maintain spray equipment, paint booths, ventilation systems, and painting tools in clean, safe, and operational condition.
• Return tools and equipment to their designated locations after completing work.
• Ensure proper storage and handling of paints, solvents, and other painting materials.
• Follow risk assessment procedures, personal protective equipment requirements, environmental protection measures, and hazardous-material handling procedures.
• Maintain strong safety, cleanliness, and foreign object debris prevention standards.
• Obtain and use appropriate technical documentation, including component maintenance manuals, paint technical data sheets, and Material Safety Data Sheets.
• Work effectively with colleagues and other maintenance personnel to achieve required production and quality standards.

Qualifications required:

• Completion of a recognized apprentice program, or a relevant KNEC Engineering Diploma or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
• Trade test training or certification in industrial or aircraft painting.
• Minimum one year of experience in aircraft or industrial painting.
• Knowledge of desktop publishing software and stencil-cutting techniques.
• Knowledge of surface preparation and paint application techniques.
• Understanding of aircraft materials such as aluminium and composite materials and their corrosion protection requirements.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and process sheets.
• Familiarity with paint thickness measurement tools.
• Knowledge of paint mixing and colour matching.
• Familiarity with aircraft paint systems and application techniques.
• Ability to safely use and maintain painting tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures related to paint handling and application.
• Strong attention to detail and a high standard of workmanship.
• Strong focus on safety, cleanliness, and FOD prevention.
• Good communication and documentation skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Physical stamina and the ability to work in confined spaces or at heights.
• Familiarity with aerospace materials and coatings is an added advantage.
