Responsibilities

• Receive, sort, and refer laboratory specimens for testing.
• Verify and capture specimen information using the Meditech laboratory system.
• Prepare specimens and laboratory media for analysis.
• Label, store, and maintain traceability of samples.
• Monitor stock levels and ensure laboratory supplies are available.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including centrifuges and thermometers.
• Record equipment maintenance and quality control results.
• Troubleshoot minor equipment issues and report faults when necessary.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment.
• Follow infection prevention and biohazard waste disposal procedures.
• Assist with internal and external quality control audits.
• Report incidents, equipment failures, and operational concerns.
• Complete assigned tasks using the laboratory information system.
• Participate in seminars and continuing professional development (CPD).
• Maintain professional and ethical laboratory standards.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification.
• Relevant laboratory certificate.
• Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
• 0–1 year of relevant laboratory experience.
• Knowledge of laboratory information systems.
• Understanding of laboratory standard operating procedures.
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology related to pathology.
• Understanding of medical ethics and organizational policies.
• Strong attention to detail and good hand-eye coordination.
• Problem-solving ability and effective teamwork skills.
• Ability to work under pressure while maintaining confidentiality.
• Good self-management and the ability to follow procedures consistently.
