Lancet Laboratories is inviting applications for the position of Phlebotomist at its Umtata Laboratory in South Africa. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting blood and other specimens for diagnostic testing while ensuring patient safety, maintaining high ethical standards, and supporting efficient laboratory operations. Candidates with HPCSA or SANC registration and up to two years of relevant experience are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

• Correctly identify patients and explain specimen collection procedures and patient rights.
• Collect blood and non-blood specimens using appropriate sterile techniques.
• Monitor patients during specimen collection and provide first aid when necessary.
• Dispose of biohazardous waste in accordance with safety regulations.
• Accurately record patient and specimen information.
• Prepare and dispatch specimens for laboratory processing.
• Track specimen progress and respond to laboratory-related queries.
• Assist with the delivery of laboratory reports when required.
• Monitor inventory and request specimen collection supplies.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized working environment.
• Follow infection prevention, quality control, and laboratory procedures.
• Provide professional customer service to patients, doctors, and hospital staff.
• Assist pathologists during specialized procedures when required.
• Provide relevant HIV/AIDS pre-test information and support.
• Receive patient payments and follow approved banking procedures.
• Record incidents and customer complaints accurately.
• Complete all required tasks using the laboratory information system.

Qualifications

• Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) or South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• 0–2 years of relevant phlebotomy experience.
• Knowledge of phlebotomy procedures and specimen collection techniques.
• Understanding of medical ethics and patient confidentiality.
• Knowledge of laboratory information systems.
• Understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong attention to detail and administrative ability.
• Empathy, patience, and the ability to support anxious patients.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Teamwork, flexibility, and professionalism.
