Job Description

Absa Bank Tanzania is seeking a Senior Relationship Manager – Local Large Corporate to manage and grow a portfolio of Local Large and Regional Corporate banking customers in Dar es Salaam. The role is suited to an experienced corporate banking professional with strong relationship management, business development, credit risk, sales, and leadership capabilities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for maximizing portfolio profitability while maintaining appropriate credit and reputational risk standards. The position also involves developing new business, increasing wallet share among existing customers, negotiating financial transactions with senior corporate executives, and supporting the leadership and development of the wider Corporate Banking team.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and grow a portfolio of Local Large and Regional Corporate banking customers.

  • Identify new business opportunities and promote relevant banking products to existing and prospective customers.

  • Develop business development strategies that respond to changing market and customer needs.

  • Build and maintain long-term relationships with senior corporate decision-makers.

  • Develop Customer Relationship Plans for customers within the assigned portfolio.

  • Research and maintain target lists for potential new corporate business.

  • Identify priority customers and assess their current and potential contribution to the Bank.

  • Conduct annual and interim reviews of borrowing and non-borrowing customers where required.

  • Assess customer needs and recommend suitable banking products and services.

  • Drive increased wallet share by expanding relationships with existing customers.

  • Monitor portfolio performance against financial, sales, service, and operational targets.

  • Manage portfolio quality and ensure compliance with risk management policies and guidelines.

  • Research competitive threats and opportunities within the relevant industries and geographical markets.

  • Communicate key customer information, service standards, negotiated pricing, and product changes.

  • Monitor customer complaints and service quality within the portfolio.

  • Consult corporate owners and managers on financial, credit, and general business matters.

  • Work closely with the Head – Large Corporate to deliver business performance.

  • Stand in for the Head – Large Corporate when required and provide leadership to the unit.

  • Coach and support members of the Corporate Banking team in relationship development, service quality, and risk management.

  • Help team members identify strengths, development needs, and appropriate training opportunities.

  • Assess managers’ performance and contribute to Performance Development Reviews.

  • Support change initiatives affecting the portfolio and business area.

  • Balance lending requirements with risk-adjusted returns and the Bank’s reputational risk considerations.

  • Develop an intimate understanding of the local corporate market, industries, and relevant regulatory environment.

  • Negotiate financial transactions with senior management of corporate customers.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Commerce, Management Studies, or a related field.

  • Professional qualifications in a relevant business or banking discipline are advantageous.

  • Strong commercial and sales orientation.

  • Strong business development and relationship management capabilities.

  • Excellent selling and negotiation skills.

  • Strong credit risk management skills.

  • Strong understanding of credit risk policies and risk assessment.
