Equity Bank Tanzania is inviting applications for the position of Manager: QR Merchant Solutions. The role reports to the Senior Manager: Agency Banking and focuses on expanding QR-based payment acceptance among mass-market and MSME merchants, particularly through TANQR solutions.
The successful candidate will be responsible for merchant acquisition, onboarding, activation and transaction growth. The role also combines digital payments, sales, merchant relationship management, product development, revenue generation, market expansion, risk management and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
Basic Purpose
The Manager: QR Merchant Solutions will drive the acquisition, activation and growth of QR-based payment merchants across mass-market and MSME segments.
The position will focus on expanding TANQR acceptance, increasing transaction volumes, maintaining strong merchant engagement and delivering seamless digital payment experiences while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and bank policies.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
QR Merchant Acquisition and Onboarding
The successful candidate will:

Acquire and onboard mass-market and MSME merchants for QR payment solutions.

Drive deployment of static and dynamic QR solutions across retail outlets, micro-merchants and small businesses.

Ensure smooth digital merchant onboarding.

Ensure compliance with KYC requirements.

Ensure QR activation is completed within defined turnaround times.
Merchant Activation and Usage Growth
Responsibilities will include:

Educating merchants about QR payments, settlement cycles and reconciliation.

Creating awareness to increase merchant adoption.
-
Monitoring merchant activation rates.
-
Ensuring merchants maintain consistent transaction activity after onboarding.
-
Developing strategies to increase QR transaction frequency.
-
Improve transaction ticket sizes.
-
Increase merchant retention and ongoing usage.
Product and Solution Management
The Manager will:

Promote the bank's TANQR solutions across relevant customer segments.

Cross-sell related digital products, including current accounts, mobile banking, merchant applications and cash-management solutions.

Collect merchant feedback on QR products and services.
-
Work with relevant teams to improve QR features and the overall user experience.

Identify opportunities to enhance the bank's digital payment solutions.
Revenue and Performance Management
The position will be accountable for:

Achieving TANQR merchant acquisition targets.

Increasing the number of active TANQR merchants.

Growing TANQR transaction volumes and values.
-
Driving non-funded income (NFI) from the merchant portfolio.

Growing float balances linked to QR merchant accounts.

Tracking merchant portfolio performance.

Preparing performance reports and dashboards.

Monitoring key business metrics and implementing corrective strategies where necessary.
Market Development and Partnerships
The successful candidate will:

Identify high-potential merchant clusters, markets and business ecosystems for QR expansion.

Develop opportunities to increase TANQR penetration.
-
Work with channel partners, fintech companies, aggregators and ecosystem players.

Build partnerships that can accelerate QR merchant acquisition.

Monitor competing QR payment solutions.
-
Recommend strategies that differentiate the bank's QR offering.
Operations, Risk and Compliance
Responsibilities include:

Ensure compliance with KYC and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) requirements.

Ensure QR operations comply with applicable local regulatory guidelines and bank policies.

Address merchant queries relating to settlements and payment issues.
-
Coordinate with operations and technology teams to resolve technical problems.

Monitor potential fraud risks.
-
Promote secure QR payment usage across the merchant portfolio.

Ensure appropriate operational and compliance controls are maintained.
Stakeholder Coordination
The Manager will coordinate with:

Qualifications and Experience
Education
Applicants should have:

A Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Commerce or a related field.

An MBA or certification in Digital Payments will be an advantage.
Experience
Candidates should have:

4–8 years of experience in digital payments, QR acquiring or merchant acquiring.

Hands-on experience with QR payment solutions.
-
Experience in Mobile Financial Services is strongly preferred.
