The position also involves leading the credit-control team, improving collections processes, managing long-outstanding debts, and providing management with reliable information for credit and receivables decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Financial and Credit Control

  • Develop and implement credit-control strategies aligned with cash-flow targets, approved credit terms, collection targets, and risk appetite.

  • Oversee premium invoicing follow-up, collections, payment allocation, receipting support, and reconciliation of intermediary, direct-client, corporate, and bancassurance accounts.

  • Conduct or review creditworthiness assessments for brokers, corporate clients, policyholders, and other producers.

  • Recommend appropriate credit terms, credit limits, payment plans, or suspension actions based on credit assessments.

  • Monitor debtor ageing, overdue premiums, claims recoveries, bounced payments, and disputed balances.

  • Ensure timely escalation, resolution, and recovery of outstanding debts.

  • Prepare receivables dashboards and debtor-ageing analysis.

  • Prepare collection-performance reports, bad-debt provisioning inputs, and exception reports for management decision-making.

  • Monitor the effectiveness of collection strategies and recommend corrective measures where necessary.

Operational Risk Management

  • Identify, assess, and report credit, process, and operational risk events within approved timelines.

  • Track corrective actions and ensure identified risk issues are closed.

  • Strengthen controls around credit vetting, account onboarding, account maintenance, dunning, payment plans, credit notes, refunds, write-offs, reversals, and suspense-account clearance.

  • Implement and monitor debt-recovery procedures for long-outstanding accounts.

  • Coordinate structured follow-ups and recovery escalations.

  • Engage legal and recovery partners where necessary.

  • Track recovery cases through to resolution and closure.

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and automation.

  • Improve collections discipline, operational controls, and visibility of receivables.

Audit and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with the Credit Control Policy and premium-collection procedures.

  • Ensure adherence to cancellation, dunning, and approved escalation requirements.

  • Support internal, external, and regulatory audits by providing accurate credit-control records and supporting documentation.

  • Prepare reconciliations, ageing schedules, management responses, and other information required during audits.

  • Ensure accurate and timely regulatory reporting relating to credit control, premium collections, and outstanding debts where required.

  • Track and ensure timely closure of audit, compliance, and risk findings.

  • Maintain complete documentation of correspondence, approvals, reconciliations, payment plans, and recovery actions.

  • Ensure credit-control records are properly maintained and readily available for audit purposes.

People and Stakeholder Management

  • Set clear objectives, KPIs, and work plans for the credit-control team.

  • Align team activities with cash-flow, receivables, collection, and risk-management objectives.

  • Coach and develop team members in collections, reconciliation, credit assessment, negotiation, stakeholder management, reporting, and regulatory compliance.

  • Monitor team productivity, service standards, account follow-up, dispute resolution, and audit-action closure.

  • Engage brokers, agents, bancassurance partners, corporate clients, and other stakeholders to resolve overdue balances.

  • Resolve account queries and reconciliation gaps.

  • Collaborate with Finance, Underwriting, Claims, Sales, Operations, intermediaries, and clients to improve premium collection and debtor regularisation.

Learning and Development

  • Maintain a personal development plan aligned with technical, regulatory, and service requirements.

  • Complete required learning and training through e-learning, internal training, and approved professional-development activities.

  • Coach and develop team members to improve productivity, technical capability, and overall performance.

  • Encourage continuous learning and application of best practices within the credit-control function.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • A professional qualification such as CPA(K), ACCA, or an equivalent credit or finance qualification.

  • Membership in ICPAK, ACCA, or another relevant professional body, where applicable, is an added advantage.
