Reconciliation Officer

NBC Tanzania is seeking a Reconciliation Officer to support its financial control and banking operations in Dar es Salaam. The role focuses on ensuring that assigned bank accounts and transaction records are accurately reconciled, discrepancies are investigated, and outstanding items are resolved or escalated appropriately.

This position is particularly suitable for professionals with a background in accounting, finance, banking, or business administration who have strong numerical and analytical skills. The successful candidate will work with branches, finance, operations, technology, and other teams while helping the bank strengthen controls, prevent losses, identify operational risks, and maintain regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily reconciliations of assigned suspense, digital, settlement, Nostro, and general ledger accounts.

• Identify unmatched, aged, unusual, and exception items promptly.

  

• Investigate discrepancies using source documents, transaction reports, system postings, and branch submissions.

• Recommend appropriate corrective actions for identified discrepancies.

• Work with branches, Operations, Finance, Technology, and other reporting units to obtain explanations and supporting evidence.

• Validate the ownership, accuracy, ageing, and risk impact of reconciling items.

• Escalate material, long-outstanding, or high-risk exceptions to the relevant Supervisor or Manager.

• Maintain reconciliation templates, supporting evidence, and exception trackers in approved repositories.

• Support branches and process owners with guidance on reconciliation and balancing procedures.

• Maintain accurate and retrievable reconciliation records, approvals, explanations, and supporting documentation.

• Identify control weaknesses, operational risk events, unusual trends, and potential fraud indicators.

• Comply with KYC, AML, sanctions, regulatory, and internal control requirements.

• Support internal and external audits by providing reconciliation evidence and explanations.

• Prepare or support management reports covering reconciliation status, outstanding items, ageing, root causes, and action plans.

• Ensure reconciliation activities remain within the approved mandate and escalation framework.

• Comply with information security, confidentiality, user-access, password, and segregation-of-duties requirements.

• Keep up to date with NBC policies, procedures, reconciliation standards, and operational risk requirements.

• Identify personal skills gaps and training needs related to reconciliation, risk management, and reporting.

• Work toward agreed performance and development objectives.

• Apply feedback and lessons learned to improve accuracy, timeliness, and service quality.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in Banking, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.

• At least one year of relevant experience in reconciliation, banking operations, finance operations, branch operations, or a related control function.

• Understanding of suspense, digital, settlement, Nostro, and general ledger account operations.

• Knowledge of reconciliation processes and exception management.

• Strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving abilities.

• High attention to detail and accuracy.

• Good understanding of accounting principles and bank reconciliation procedures.

• Knowledge of internal controls and operational risk management.

• Understanding of KYC, AML, sanctions, regulatory, and banking compliance requirements.

• Ability to manage multiple reconciliations within strict daily, weekly, and monthly deadlines.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with different departments.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

• Intermediate to advanced Excel skills, particularly filtering, PivotTables, lookups, and basic data analysis.

• Good written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to explain financial exceptions, risks, and required corrective actions professionally.

• Quality-oriented approach and strong ethical standards.

• Openness to change and willingness to learn.

• Digital familiarity and financial management/accounting experience.
