What This Job Really Involves
This is a senior ESG and climate-risk leadership position within banking. It goes considerably beyond conventional environmental assessment.
The manager will help CRDB determine whether environmental, social, climate, and sustainability risks associated with borrowers and projects could expose the Bank to financial, credit, regulatory, legal, operational, or reputational risks.
A major component is integrating E&S and climate considerations into the credit lifecycle. This means reviewing projects before financing, determining their risk category, setting environmental and social conditions for financing, monitoring borrowers after approval, and escalating serious issues when required.
The role also has a strong strategic and governance component. The Senior Manager is expected to develop systems, dashboards, risk registers, policies, reporting frameworks, and processes that allow the Bank to manage ESG and climate risks across its entire portfolio.
Another important difference from the Specialist position is the leadership expectation. The Senior Manager will lead professionals and cross-functional teams, manage consultants and strategic partners, represent the Bank externally, and drive institutional ESG and sustainable-finance initiatives.
Ideal Candidate
The strongest applicant would typically combine:
-
6+ years of E&S, ESG, climate-risk, sustainable-finance, or environmental-compliance experience.
-
Strong ESDD experience, particularly under IFC Performance Standards.
-
Experience within banking, development finance, project finance, or a comparable regulated environment.
-
Strong understanding of Tanzanian environmental legislation.
-
Experience with climate-risk assessment and sustainable finance.
-
Knowledge of GHG accounting and financed emissions.
-
Experience with ESG and sustainability reporting.
-
Knowledge of IFRS S1/S2, ISSB, GRI, TCFD, TNFD, and PCAF.
-
Experience implementing ESAPs and monitoring environmental/social covenants.
-
Strong stakeholder and regulator engagement capabilities.
-
Experience leading teams and external consultants.
-
Strategic thinking combined with strong technical E&S expertise.

Final Thought
