Vodacom Tanzania Plc is seeking a skilled Data Engineer to join its team in Mwanza. This is a full-time opportunity for a data professional who can design, develop, and operate large-scale data systems and pipelines that support business operations and decision-making.
The role focuses heavily on Big Data engineering, including batch and real-time data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, cloud-native applications, data quality, security, and scalable data architectures. The successful candidate will work with technical, data science, architecture, and business teams to build reliable data platforms and support new data-driven business use cases.
Responsibilities

Build batch and real-time data pipelines.

Implement automated testing, deployment, data validation, and data cleansing processes.

Design effective data storage strategies and schema structures for high-performance querying.

Use technologies such as Apache Iceberg and Hive to support scalable data environments.

Design and develop scalable, stable, and high-performing cloud-native Big Data applications.

Source data from APIs, relational databases, streaming platforms, and other systems.

Ensure data is delivered in the correct formats and meets required quality standards.

Implement data validation frameworks and data lineage tracking.

Apply security controls to protect data and support privacy and regulatory compliance.

Use tools such as Apache Ranger to strengthen data security.

Collaborate with architecture, data science, and business teams.

Evaluate emerging technologies and contribute to the development of Big Data capabilities.

Support agile development and engineering practices.

Prepare and maintain technical documentation.
Qualifications and Requirements
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

At least 2 years of experience in Data Engineering, Big Data Development, or Data Architecture.

Experience developing production-grade data pipelines.
-
Experience in telecommunications or another data-intensive industry is an added advantage.

Hands-on experience building ETL/ELT pipelines using Spark, Flink, and Airflow.

Experience handling high-volume, real-time, and batch data streams.

Strong proficiency in Python, Scala, or Java.

Advanced SQL skills.

Experience with distributed query engines such as Trino.

Knowledge of data warehousing concepts, including Star and Snowflake schemas.

Experience with modern table formats such as Apache Iceberg.

Knowledge of Hadoop, Hive, Trino, and Kafka.

Knowledge of automated data validation and security tools such as Apache Ranger.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Good documentation skills.

Strong cross-functional communication and teamwork skills.
