Tobacco Processing Operator job at JTI Tanzania

Japan Tobacco International (JTI) is seeking an experienced Tobacco Processing Operator to join its Production team in Dar es Salaam. This is a permanent position responsible for operating tobacco-processing machinery, maintaining product quality, supporting smooth production processes, and ensuring that production areas and equipment remain clean and safe.

The successful candidate will work under the Team Lead and must have practical experience in a tobacco-processing environment. In addition to machinery operation, the role requires knowledge of tobacco processing lines, basic computer skills, safe working practices, effective communication, and the ability to operate a forklift in a restricted shop-floor environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the Lamina in-feed line, CFT bin filling station, and CFT Maker feeders.

  • Use a forklift to support tobacco-processing operations while maintaining workplace safety.

  • Ensure the quality of produced tobacco meets established standards and operating procedures.

  • Inspect tobacco-processing lines before starting operations.

  • Clean processing lines according to machine-cleaning work instructions and procedures.

  • Clean the process line after dark-fired blend production before commencing light-grade blend production.

  • Conduct thorough process-line cleaning at the end of the production day.

  • Maintain a safe working environment during machine operation and cleaning activities.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure safety requirements are followed.

  • Maintain proper housekeeping throughout the production shift.

  • Keep the work area clean and ensure working tools are properly arranged.

  • Communicate effectively with the Tobacco Processing Lead and other team members.

  • Support smooth operation between upstream and downstream work centres.

  • Operate relevant tobacco-processing equipment in accordance with established procedures.

  • Maintain machinery and equipment in good operating condition.

  • Follow instructions provided by supervisors and comply with JTI production and safety standards.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • A University Degree in Engineering or an equivalent qualification.

  • At least 2 years of experience working in a tobacco-processing environment.

  • Understanding of both English and Swahili.

  • Basic computer knowledge.

  • Proficiency in operating Lamina Conditioning/Casing and Stem Conditioning work centres.

  • Practical knowledge of tobacco-processing machinery and production procedures.

  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and safety instructions.

  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

  • Strong commitment to product quality and workplace safety.

  • Ability to maintain effective housekeeping in a production environment.

  • Forklift operating skills, particularly in a restricted shop-floor environment, as required by the role.
