Role Summary
The Driver / Mechanic will ensure the safe transportation of staff, goods, and organizational equipment while also providing basic mechanical maintenance for vehicles, motorcycles, and generators.
The role requires a reliable, flexible, and safety-conscious individual capable of working in remote field locations and maintaining professionalism at all times.
Key Responsibilities
1. Vehicle Operations & Safety
- Safely drive RTV vehicles for official assignments in urban and rural areas.
- Conduct daily vehicle inspections (fuel, oil, coolant, brakes, tires, battery, lights).
- Ensure compliance with Tanzanian Road Traffic and Transport Regulations.
- Report accidents, incidents, or mechanical faults immediately.
- Ensure passengers wear seat belts and prioritize safety.
- Manage long-distance and extended field travel safely.
2. Fleet Maintenance & Mechanical Support
- Maintain vehicles according to approved service schedules.
- Perform minor mechanical repairs as needed.
- Coordinate major repairs with approved garages.
- Support maintenance of motorcycles and generators.
- Monitor and control fuel consumption according to policy.
3. Documentation & Asset Management
- Maintain accurate vehicle logbooks and checklists.
- Ensure First Aid kits are stocked in all vehicles.
- Keep vehicles clean, roadworthy, and authorized for organizational use only.
- Safely transport goods and equipment.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Ordinary Level Certificate (mandatory).
- Certificate in Motor Vehicle Technician Course Part II or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as Driver/Mechanic, preferably with an international NGO.
- Valid Tanzanian driving license (Classes A, B, DL as applicable).
- Excellent command of Swahili and English; local Kagera languages an advantage.
- Willingness to travel frequently to remote areas and work flexible hours.
- Drivers requiring glasses must wear them at all times.
- Strong knowledge of Tanzanian Traffic and Road Transport Regulations.
